On May 5, 2025, Princess Anne appeared alongside her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, for a rare joint engagement as they joined senior members of the royal family to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The princess royal wore a simple yet striking military uniform with no decorations, mirroring the outfit worn by her late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her iconic appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony on VE Day in 1945, when she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
On May 8, 1945, as Europe celebrated victory, the then-Princess Elizabeth and her younger sister Princess Margaret, aged 19 and 14 respectively, longed to join the jubilant crowds outside the palace. Their father, King George VI, granted permission for the sisters to go out, provided they were accompanied by 16 trusted members of the royal household. Among the group was the queen’s first cousin, Margaret Rhodes.
Recalling the experience, Rhodes said: “We crossed the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and got to the railings and there were these masses and masses of people. There was a general thing of, ‘We want the King and Queen’, which we all frantically joined in with and were amazed when, five or 10 minutes later, the windows opened and they came out onto the balcony.
She continued: “It was like a wonderful escape for the girls. I don’t think they’d ever been out among millions of people. It was just freedom – to be an ordinary person.”
Although their photographs were taken eight decades apart, the visual and emotional connection between Princess Anne and her late mother was unmistakable, reflecting their devotion to royal duty.

Princess Anne honored her position as Commandant-in-Chief of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps) with an ensemble that balanced tradition and formality. She wore a tailored green jacket, cinched with a belt, over a crisp shirt and tie – an outfit that nodded to her military role and longstanding dedication.
True to her signature style, Anne styled her hair in a neat chignon tucked beneath her hat, a look she has favored for years. She completed the appearance with her classic touch of ruby red lipstick, adding subtle flair while maintaining her elegant, no-fuss aesthetic.
Over the years, Anne has perfected a streamlined beauty routine that she rarely strays from, whether attending a royal gala or carrying out daily engagements. Though understated, her look is known to be difficult to emulate, a testament to her refined consistency.
Anne was joined by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. The day featured a celebratory military parade, an aerial display by the Red Arrows, and the iconic appearance of the royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
Later, veterans from the Second World War and British and Commonwealth Armed Forces members were honored at a tea party in the palace gardens. The commemorations continued throughout the week, culminating in a solemn service at Westminster Abbey on May 8, 2025, and a star-studded concert at Horse Guards Parade.
