Princess Anne Debuts First Hairstyle Change In 50 Years For 75th Birthday Portrait

Just ahead of her milestone 75th birthday, a fresh portrait of Princess Anne was unveiled, capturing her in radiant form. The Princess Royal, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has long been recognized for her unwavering dedication to the monarchy, following closely in the path set by her parents.

For the fourth consecutive year, 2024 saw her ranked as the British royal family’s “hardest-working” member, based on the number of official engagements logged in The Court Circular. This achievement came despite an unexpected setback in June, when a horse-related “incident” at her Gatcombe Park estate left her with a concussion and minor injuries, forcing her to step back from public duties temporarily.

Reflecting on the accident, Anne admitted she had no recollection of the event and said it served as a reminder of life’s fragility. During a solo visit to South Africa in January 2025, she told the Press Association, as reported by the BBC:

“It just reminds you, shows you – you never quite know, something (happens) and you might not recover… You are sharply reminded that every day is a bonus really.”

When asked about the possibility of stepping away from royal duties, the sister of King Charles III dismissed the idea with characteristic pragmatism:

“I don’t think there’s a retirement program on this particular life.”

On Aug. 8, 2025, Buckingham Palace shared a newly commissioned photograph of Princess Anne to mark her milestone birthday. The Princess Royal turned 75 on Aug. 15, and the early release of the image signaled the start of her birthday celebrations.

The portrait featured Princess Anne alongside her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and was taken by Chris Jackson, Getty Images’ renowned royal photographer. Jackson, who also captured Queen Camilla’s 78th birthday portrait, photographed the royal couple ahead of the State Banquet at Windsor Castle in July 2025.

The dinner, which took place on July 9, 2025, was part of the three-day state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron. In an unusual change of tradition, the formal banquet was hosted at Windsor Castle instead of the customary Buckingham Palace setting.

For the glamorous evening, Princess Anne debuted a subtle yet notable change to her look, swapping her well-known bouffant hairstyle of more than 50 years for a refined chignon.

Adding to the elegance of her ensemble, she wore the Festoon Tiara, one of her signature jewels. The piece has a personal history: it was presented to her in 1973 by the Worldwide Shipping Group as a token of gratitude after she christened one of their vessels that year, when she was 23.

The new portrait not only highlights Princess Anne’s enduring grace and sense of duty but also offers a glimpse into the personal touches she brings to royal tradition, blending timeless elegance with understated updates for a landmark year in her life.

The year 2025 also brought personal joy for the Princess Royal, as her eldest son, Peter Phillips, announced his engagement to Harriet Sperling on Aug. 1, 2025, after a year of dating.

Phillips, 47, who works in sports management, was first romantically linked to the pediatric nurse in May 2024, and the pair has made several public appearances together since. Princess Anne was seen sharing a warm conversation with her future daughter-in-law at Royal Ascot on June 17, 2025.
