Prince William Says Wife Kate Middleton Is Encouraging Him To Get Into Gardening For Adorable Purpose

Prince William made a visit to Rhyl, North Wales, on Thursday, May 6, 2021. He was there to visit the Men’s Shed, which is a community project that encourages men who feel isolated to build things and grow vegetables. While speaking with Brian Penney, a coordinator for the project, the prince revealed he has been getting into a new hobby lately.

The Duke of Cambridge seemed to be very relaxed and cracked a few jokes while at the event. He appeared to be very comfortable getting his hands dirty and admitted that his wife, Kate Middleton, has been encouraging him to get more interested in gardening. It is no secret that Kate loves to garden. In 2019, she revealed her stunning Back to Nature garden and wowed the public. This time, however, she had a different motive for wanting William to get into gardening.

At the engagement, William revealed that Kate is encouraging him to garden because it is something that his father, Prince Charles, is very passionate about. In Netflix’s series about the royal family, “The Crown,” the character of Camilla describes Charles as being obsessed with gardening and goes on to explain his desire for a kitchen garden, walled garden, wild garden and sunken garden. While the show is fiction, this fact about Charles they got right.

It seems that William is making an effort to enjoy gardening in order to bond with his father. This is not the only hobby Charles has inspired his son to try; the father and son duo both enjoy playing polo as well. Read on to learn more about William’s budding love for gardening.

While at the event, William was given the opportunity to assist with planting an apple tree. He can be seen in a video provided by the Mirror carefully adding dirt to the potted plant. “My wife does all the gardening. I really like it, but I have no idea what I’m doing,” he said to the project coordinator.

William joked about the apple tree that was planted to commemorate his visit. “Next time I come there will be 300 apples on it,” he said. He seemed to really enjoy taking part in the planting. The Mirror reports that he was relaxed the entire time and even teased the project coordinators a bit. “It’s good to see you have got really nice watering cans. Nice pink colour. That’s a lovely mermaid. Very masculine for the Men’s Shed ... I always find something to embarrass people with,” he joked.

After the event, Penney said this about the duke: “He told me Kate is getting him into gardening. She’s going to get him Monty Don’s book. He said she wants to get him into it because Charles is into it, so it’s something for them to enjoy together. He was so down to earth, such a nice man,” according to the Mirror.

Monty Don is a British writer and broadcaster that is best known for being a lead presenter on the BBC show “Gardeners’ World.” He has also written his own books on gardening, which Kate must be familiar with if she recommended them to William, like the project coordinator said.

Charles has long had an interest in both gardening and farming. After moving to Highgrove House in the 1980s, he began running his own organic farm on the property and even opened his own brand in 1990, Duchy Originals, which sells organic food and gardening products. The prince does seem most comfortable when outdoors surrounded by his plants.

In a 2018 interview with “Gardeners’ World,” Charles shared that he first fell in love with gardening as a child. “I remember being absolutely riveted as a child wandering about…looking at all the plants. The smell and everything had a profound effect on me. I don’t know why but I also grew to love trees, they always fascinated me,” he said. He also added that he was always inspired by his mother’s garden at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Also in 2018, Charles released “70 Facts for His Royal Highness's 70th Birthday.” Most of the facts were about his early life and history, but fact number 70 was about his love for plants. “The Prince often carries out tree planting ceremonies during engagements. After planting each tree, His Royal Highness gives a branch a friendly shake to wish them well,” reads the list. Charles seems to have a deep love and respect for trees and plants in general.

It is extremely sweet and touching that Kate would encourage William to show more interest in gardening to connect more with his father. Hopefully, the prince is able to expand his gardening skills and spend more time with his family in nature.
