Prince William Says He'd 'Fully Support' His Children If They Were LGBT

Prince William showed his support for the LGBTQ+ community by visiting the Albert Kenny Trust (AKT), a charity in the UK that is focused on supporting and advocating for young people who are LGBTQ+ and homeless or living in hostile environments. During the visit, the Duke of Cambridge was asked about how he would feel it one of his children came out as gay.

Prince William’s visit to the AKT is very important because it marks the first time a member of the royal family has visited a LGBTQ+ charity.

AKT said the Prince has agreed to open the charity’s new YouthSpace in Hoxton “which will greatly help our mission to prevent LGBTQ+ youth homelessness.” The royal met with young people affected by homelessness and learned about the issues the youth homeless face.

According to the Associated Press, a participant during the visit asked William, “If your child one day in the future said, ‘Oh I’m gay, oh I’m lesbian,’ whatever, how would you react?”

William replied “Absolutely fine by me.”

The Prince added he would “fully support” his child’s orientation though he did note that he would worry about the possible backlash his child would endure since they are in an incredibly high profile position.

“It worries me not because of them being gay. It worries me as to how everyone else will react and perceive it, and then the pressure is then on them.” he continued.

Last year, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, married James Coyle his longtime partner in the first-ever same-sex marriage by a member of the extended royal family. A year before the Queen stated during her speech at the State Opening of Parliament, that her government would "tackle the gender pay gap and discrimination against people on the basis of their race, faith, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.”

Additionally, People reports Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had expressed a shared interest in speaking up for LGBTQ rights at the Commonwealth Youth Forum last year.

Prince William continued his remarks to the participant’s question at the AKT visit saying,

"I wish we lived in a world where it's really normal and cool, but particularly for my family, and the position that we are in, that's the bit I am nervous about, how many barriers, you know, hateful words, persecution, all that and discrimination that might come, that's the bit that really troubles me.

But that's for all of us to try and help correct and make sure we can put that to the past and not come back to that sort of stuff,” according to the BBC.
