Prince William Reportedly Invoked A Law To Protect Kate Middleton From 'Mistakes Of The Past'

Prince William and Kate Middleton are two of the most famous figures in the British Royal Family. Beloved by the public and the press, the pair is always seen with smiling faces in public engagements and has proved their prominence as working members of the royal family. With a family of their own consisting of three children, the Cambridge couple always has events and milestones to mark in their public and private lives.

In April of 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated their milestone 10th wedding anniversary on April 29. The couple also released two stunning photographs to commemorate the occasion. This pair of new anniversary photos are certainly an indication that Prince William and Kate Middleton still seem to be very much in love a decade after they first tied the knot.

Now that the attention is all on the wedded pair, the findings from a 2020 documentary series called "The Tabloids and the Royals" are resurfacing. After the gorgeous photos of Middleton from Prince Philip's funeral in April of 2021 and her overall decade of style looks, the attention is on the Duchess yet again. 

Because the topic of royals and the paparazzi are not new — especially given Princess Diana's experience with the press — it's not all that surprising that Prince William reportedly invoked an EU law to protect Kate Middleton from her past being able to haunt her.

Read on to learn more about exactly how Prince William used the law to protect his wife — and from what exactly, for that matter.  

According to Town & Country, Middleton met William at the University of St. Andrew's, where the two enrolled in 2001. In one of the most famous stories from their university days, the prince famously watched a charity fashion show that featured none other than Middleton herself. The relationship moved fairly quickly, with the two moving in together in a shared flat, but it wasn't until 2004 that the couple's relationship was out in the open. It was then that someone from the press snapped a photo of the two together while they were on a ski trip, which led to widespread knowledge of the two's once private relationship.

But the royal couple's relationship wasn't always a bed of roses.

In 2007, the two even separated for a short period of time, according to Town & Country.

"At the time I wasn't very happy about it, but it made me a stronger person," Middleton revealed in a television interview, according to The Guardian. "You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realized, I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me (the months apart) although I didn't think it at the time."

With that said, it didn't take long for the couple to get back together. A year after their break up, William and Middleton were spotted on another ski trip, and just two years later, the couple announced their engagement.

"You know, over the years William has looked after me," Middleton said of her relationship to the prince. "He's treated me very well — as the loving boyfriend he is, he is very supportive of me through the good times and also through the bad times."

Middleton's statement that William is a supportive partner definitely holds true. According to the "The Tabloids and the Royals" docuseries, William stepped in during the earlier times of his relationship with Middleton in order to protect her from the wrath of the tabloids. In the documentary, former editor of The Sun Kelvin MacKenzie explained how William's experience with his mother Princess Diana definitely had an impact on how he decided to protect Middleton. He said:

"If you're William, you'd seen your mother basically pursued down the high street by photographers. That would have left a scar on him, it was certainly having an effect on him. He wants to protect her so he effectively invokes the law, there's a European Court of Human Rights law saying everybody has a right to privacy. And he invoked that on Kate's behalf."

In order to secure Middleton from being bombarded by the tabloids, William referred to the power of EU law, back before Brexit discluded The United Kingdom from the European Union. In the documentary, Royal commentator Camilla Tominey added another analysis to the decision. She said:

"What was interesting about how Kate was handled in those early days was the sense of trying, very slowly, to introduce her to public life. Unlike Princess Diana, who I think felt she was thrown into the deep end. I think William wanted to avoid the mistakes of the past, that's why it was a very, very slow drip-feeding of Kate to the press and to the public."

Today, the couple has been handling the public and the press with a lot of grace and dignity, and they remain one of the most beloved royal couples in the UK.
