Prince William & Princess Catherine Put Duty First Amid Prince Harry & Meghan’s Return To England

Prince William and Princess Catherine are continuing to keep their focus on royal duties and their own family as the return of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the United Kingdom puts renewed attention on the royal family.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 44, traveled to Scotland on Sept. 17, 2026, for a day of engagements on the Isle of Bute, including a visit to Rothesay, the town that shares its name with their Scottish titles. When in Scotland, William and Catherine are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

The visit marked their first official trip to the island and carried a particularly personal connection. William and Catherine first met in Scotland as students at the University of St. Andrews in 2001, and the couple has continued to return to the country throughout their marriage.

During their latest visit, the couple highlighted community, volunteering and environmental efforts across the island. They stopped at Bute Shinty Club, where they met players and volunteers and tried their hands at shinty, a traditional Scottish sport played with a curved wooden stick and leather ball.

Catherine, who grew up playing field hockey, initially missed her shot before making solid contact. William also struggled with his first attempt, sending the ball only a few inches before getting a better hit on his second try.

The couple later joined volunteers for a beach cleanup at Ettrick Bay, learning more about efforts to protect Bute’s coastline. They also visited the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub and Hub in Port Bannatyne, where they met residents and heard about the importance of maintaining community spaces on the island.

Prince William and Princess Catherine’s Scottish outing came against the backdrop of a complicated period for the royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan returned to Britain in August with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after years living in California. Harry subsequently made his first public appearance since the move at the Invictus Spirit Awards in London on the same day William and Catherine were in Scotland.

According to PEOPLE, royal experts said William and Catherine have been resisting a knee-jerk response to the Sussexes’ return and instead concentrating on their own responsibilities and family life.

Royal biographer Simon Vigar described their approach as “keep calm and carry on,” saying they view the ongoing family drama as “a sideshow and ancient history.” Former Queen Elizabeth II press secretary Ailsa Anderson similarly told PEOPLE that William and Catherine are focused on issues important to them and do not want outside “noise” to become a distraction.

The Waleses are also navigating a major change closer to home. Earlier this month, their eldest child, Prince George, began boarding school at Eton College, marking the first time one of their children has spent significant time away from the family home.

Amid those changes, William and Catherine’s Bute visit offered a picture of the path they appear to be taking: showing up together, meeting communities and concentrating on the responsibilities immediately in front of them.

For the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Scottish getaway was not simply about the royal titles they share with Rothesay. It was another opportunity to put community, family and public service at the center of their increasingly busy new chapter.
