Princess Charlotte turned 10 in 2025, and one could argue she is one of the most famous preteens in the world. As third in line to the British throne, she has been surrounded by media attention since she was born, with royal watchers always keen to find out more about her. Before her birthday, it was revealed that the young Princess had taken to athletics, particularly running. A few years earlier, Charlotte had revealed that her favorite sport at the time was gymnastics. Her affinity for athletics comes as no surprise, as her parents are avid sports fans and have always wished to pass this passion on to their children.
According to Olympic swimmer Keely Hodgkinson, Prince William shared insights into Princess Charlotte’s athletic hobbies during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, where the gold medalist was honored. Recalling their conversation, the Olympian said:
“The Prince told me his daughter is doing the 400 meters at the minute and the hurdles and that she did watch me in Paris.”
Charlotte’s athletic abilities are varied, with her mother, Princess Catherine, revealing that she also played soccer and rugby, both of which “weren’t school sports when I was growing up.”
“Charlotte’s playing both sports now, and it’s really good to see youngsters, particularly girls, playing these types of sports now,” Catherine elaborated on her only daughter’s interests.
Apart from sports, Charlotte also enjoys active activities, with Catherine revealing she “spends most of her time upside down doing handstands or cartwheels.”
With Charlotte’s great-aunt Princess Anne having competed in the 1976 Olympics, it will be no surprise if Charlotte’s athletic passions lead to the highest level.

Apart from being an avid athlete, Princess Charlotte also possesses a good temperament, which is evident both on and off the field. From her various sporting competitions, it has been said that she is known for her grace and sportsmanship, and is often seen congratulating players on the opposing team. This is a sign of true sportsmanship, especially from a 10-year-old.
Sources close to the royal family have also spoken about the family's athletic pursuits, particularly the children. Mike Tindall, Princess Anne’s son-in-law, shared last year that both Charlotte and her older brother, Prince George, are very athletic, with the former having inherited her mother’s love for running. Tindall shared that their mom, Catherine, “loves her running,” while George, like his father, Prince William, “loves his football.”
“George loves his football,” Tindall shared. “I’ve played numerous times in the garden with him.”
He added that Prince William continues to support his boyhood soccer team, Aston Villa. The Prince of Wales has been spotted on numerous occasions showing up to support the English team.
“He’s passionate about Aston Villa, too. Wherever he is, he’ll sit down and watch that game,” Tindall said.
From their well-established interest in sports, it’s clear that the Waleses are a very athletic family, whether they are taking part in sports or simply observing.
“They’re just a family who love sport,” Tindall asserted.
From their patronage of sports and their love for them, we are eager to see how the royals will contribute to the field of athletics in the future!
