Prince William Makes Embarrassing-Parents Joke During Prince George’s First Teenage Outing

For most teenagers, few things are more uncomfortable than being put on the spot by their parents. Prince George appeared to share that familiar feeling during a family visit to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, when Prince William joked that he and Catherine already embarrass their eldest son enough.

George, who turned 13 on July 22, 2026, attended the Games with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight. The appearance was the three children’s first official public engagement together in Scotland and Louis’s first public visit to a major sporting event with his siblings.

The family watched track cycling, judo and the netball semi-final between Australia and Jamaica. At the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, they met cycling champions Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny. Kenny encouraged William and Catherine to try the track, prompting Catherine to joke: “Be careful what you wish for, as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome.”

Welsh television presenter Gethin Jones then asked the children: “Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?” George answered immediately: “No!”

Catherine laughed, and William replied: “We embarrass you enough as it is.”

The playful exchange offered a relaxed glimpse of the family away from more formal royal ceremonies. Rather than proving that George was genuinely embarrassed, the moment showed William responding humorously to his son’s emphatic answer.

Their clothing also reflected the occasion’s polished but approachable tone: George wore a white shirt and grey trousers, Charlotte chose a navy-and-white polka-dot dress, and Louis appeared in a pale blue short-sleeved shirt. Their coordinated appearance reinforced the sense of a family engagement rather than a rigid ceremonial event.

Sport remained at the heart of the visit as the Wales family met athletes, volunteers and representatives of Team Wales. George and Louis discussed events they enjoy at school, with George naming the javelin and Louis choosing the high jump. William also said that Charlotte “loves gymnastics and ballet.”

The children’s sibling dynamic emerged during a conversation with Welsh gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, who won bronze medals at the Games. Catherine turned to her youngest child and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.”

“A bit,” Louis replied, before adding: “Charlotte says I’m not very good.”

Charlotte said she could perform a handstand, while George admitted that he was “rubbish with anything that involves flexibility.” Team Wales later presented Charlotte with a signed leotard and gave the family Welsh cycling clothing and toy dragons.

Charlotte and Louis also greeted Finnie, the Games’ unicorn mascot. Charlotte reached up for a high five, and the mascot responded with an energetic leap before greeting Louis. The children were also pictured wearing Team Wales bucket hats, with Louis holding his firmly in place.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games took place from July 23 to August 2, 2026. According to the Royal Family’s official website, more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competed across 10 sports and six Para sports.

For William and Catherine, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, the outing combined royal duties with an informal family day. For George, Charlotte and Louis, it provided a chance to meet elite competitors, explore several sports and share the sort of teasing exchange familiar to families everywhere.

The visit also highlighted the Games’ emphasis on youth, participation and sporting achievement, themes that suited an appearance by three children who regularly discuss school activities with athletes.

The exchange and details about the children’s sporting interests were reported consistently in coverage of the family’s appearance, while the dates, competition programme and participation figures are supported by the official Glasgow 2026 and Royal Family websites.
