Prince William Honors Princess Diana’s Legacy During His Visit to Rio de Janeiro

Standing before the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue high above Rio de Janeiro, Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recreated one of the most touching royal moments of the past—the very same pose once shared by his late mother, Princess Diana, during her visit to Brazil in 1991.

On Nov. 3, 2025, the Prince arrived in Brazil, where he held a week of engagements blending diplomacy, environmental advocacy, and cultural outreach. His trip also coincided with preparations for the Earthshot Prize Awards, an environmental initiative he founded in 2020 to promote innovative solutions to climate change.

A royal spokesman says, “The Prince created the Earthshot Prize to find solutions that would accelerate and restore the future of the planet. We are not looking back to the ice age but looking forward to the green age. The genesis of what we are building never has, and never will be, to not get into planes and not to get into cars.”

During his time there, the Prince also immersed himself in the local culture. He played beach volleyball at Copacabana Beach, kicked a soccer ball at Maracanã Stadium, and even helped plant mangroves — highlighting the connection between recreation and sustainability.

The trip drew attention not only to environmental innovation but also to the enduring legacy of Diana’s compassion and openness. Her 1991 tour with then-Prince Charles left a lasting impression in Brazil, and her son’s return to the same landmark—the Christ the Redeemer statue—bridged the past and present in one moving image.

As part of his visit, Prince William met with the 15 finalists of the Earthshot Prize, a global environmental award that supports projects tackling significant ecological challenges. Each winner receives the equivalent of $1.3 million to expand their innovations in one of five categories: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.

The Prince spoke personally with each finalist about their experiences in the year-long mentorship program, which includes strategic support, pro-bono legal advice, and global visibility. The initiative has positioned itself as one of the world’s leading forces for environmental innovation. While in Brazil, William also addressed the United for Wildlife Summit, which combats illegal wildlife trade. His message was one of unity and purpose:

“Our task here today is clear: We must put a stop to the criminal networks driving environmental crime and destruction. We must stand alongside those who, every day, are standing up and defending nature. We must recognize and celebrate these protectors, not just in words but through our actions. And we must act together.”

William’s visit concluded with the Earthshot Awards ceremony, attended by notable figures such as Kylie Minogue, Shawn Mendes, and Cafu, Brazil’s legendary footballer. Adding star power to the environmental movement, Leonardo DiCaprio shared a video message at the summit, saying:

“Nature is our most powerful solution.”

The event celebrated both creativity and commitment—traits that echo Diana’s global humanitarian work. As one royal observer noted, William’s mission in Brazil showed that the “Diana legacy lives through him.”
