In their first-ever interview shortly after the proposal, the royal couple spoke to Sky News about their engagement but didn’t go into detail. They mostly talked about the special meaning behind their engagement ring which had originally belonged to William’s late mother Princess Diana.

On 20 January 2020, the UK hosted the UK-Africa Investment Summit at Buckingham Palace and Prince William finally shared some more details about his romantic proposal to Kate in Africa.

William revealed why he chose to propose in Kenya, Africa emphasizing his strong connection to the African continent, Kenya in particular.

"The African continent holds a very special place in my heart. It is the place my father took my brother and me shortly after our mother died,” Prince William revealed. "And when deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee."

Back in 2010, Prince William and Kate explored Kenya and ended their trip at Lake Rutundu, the spot William had singled out to be the perfect one for his proposal.

Before William popped the question on October 20, 2010, the couple started their day fishing or rather trying to fish for their attempts were quite unsuccessful revealed royal expert, Katie Nicholl, according to the Mirror

When they returned from their fishing trip, Prince William led his Kate onto the beautiful veranda of the log cabin they were staying at. He then went down on one knee and asked her to marry him, to which Kate (obviously) replied with yes.

The couple first met in 2001 and dated for about seven years before William popped the question – almost 10 years after Kate first walked into his life.
