Prince William and Princess Catherine wed in 2011 in a fairytale wedding that was one of the most anticipated of the century. More than a decade later, the royals are one of the most powerful couples in the world, not least in part because they are the future king and queen of the United Kingdom. Catherine, who used to go by her birth name Kate Middleton, is known for her iconic style and stunning outfits, particularly one eye-catching item that is a staple of every outfit – her wedding ring.

The Princess of Wales’ engagement ring was previously worn by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. The 12-karat sapphire and diamond piece that she famously wore after her engagement has since been replaced by an 18-karat Welsh gold wedding band. The gold used to make the ring was a gift from Queen Elizabeth II and was the only ring present at their wedding, as Prince William did not wear one, even just for ceremony.

To this day, there remains no ring on William’s wedding finger, nor has he ever worn one to signify his union with Catherine. Because many royal watchers had expressed curiosity about the fact, St. James’ Palace addressed the issue. It explained to Daily Mail that while Catherine wears a wedding ring, Prince William had opted not to, out of “personal preference.” It went on to add that this goes for all kinds of jewelry, revealing:

“It was something the couple discussed but Prince William isn’t one for jewelry – he doesn’t even wear a signet ring – and decided he didn’t want to. It really is just down to personal preference.”

Signet rings are commonly worn by men of William’s royal stature, more so when they don’t wear a wedding band. However, the Prince of Wales wears neither.

The reasons for Prince William opting not to wear a wedding band after his marriage to Princess Catherine were further confirmed by Robert Jobson, royal editor of the London newspaper, Evening Standard, when he commented on the issue, saying it was “his prerogative.” Penny Juror, author of “The Duchess: Camilla Parker Bowles and the Love Affair that Rocked the Crown,” also demystified the matter.

“He doesn’t like jewelry, and the Palace issued a statement before their wedding saying so,” she wrote.

Prince William’s choice to forego the wedding ring tradition was announced before his wedding, with a palace spokeswoman revealing to People magazine:

“There is only going to be one ring, in accordance with the couple’s wishes.”

The choice is not entirely a surprise, as many men in the royal family choose not to wear wedding rings. Meanwhile, their female counterparts wear their wedding bands. Royal commentator Eloise Parker explained the difference of choice, saying

“Although it’s traditional for royal women to wear both an engagement ring and a wedding ring after they get married, it’s never been traditional for royal men to wear one.”

However, William’s brother, Prince Harry, does wear a wedding ring, breaking from the norms most men in the royal family live by.

Prince William’s choice not to wear his wedding ring shouldn’t change much though. After all, about two billion people tuned in to watch William and Catherine’s 2011 nuptials, making his marital status a fact known to all. Their wedding also had its fair share of stunning photography, including the iconic image of them kissing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Wedding ring or no, the Prince and Princess of Wales remain a picture-perfect ideal of a beautiful marriage.
