Born on June 21, 1982, Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is the firstborn son of King Charles III and his former wife, the late Princess Diana. Even his birth was an iconic moment. The following morning, his parents introduced the newborn prince to the world on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital in London for his very first photo opportunity.
As the years went by, the world watched on as Prince William continued to experience new adventures and grow right before our eyes. Following the passing of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022, the royal family’s titles were updated, designating William and his wife, Catherine, as the new Prince and Princess of Wales. They were formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Nowadays, William continues to utilize his title and platform to make the royal family proud and to serve as a voice for those in need, encouraging others to contribute to making the world a better place. While he’s a busy man, William makes sure to celebrate all the happy occasions with his loved ones.
Going back in time, when Prince William was just 9 months old, he accompanied his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, on his first royal tour in 1983, traveling to Australia and New Zealand for six weeks. The decision broke royal tradition, as heirs to the throne typically did not travel together. During the visit, locals affectionately nicknamed him “Wombat.”
In 1987, William began his education at Wetherby School in London, later joined by his younger brother, Prince Harry. Photos from their youth often showed the strong bond they shared with their mother. However, tragedy struck in 1997 when Princess Diana died in a car accident. William, just 15 at the time, publicly mourned her loss, walking behind her coffin at her funeral.

William later attended the University of St. Andrews, where he earned a Scottish Master of Arts degree in geography in 2005. There, he met Kate Middleton. Their romance blossomed, and after briefly breaking up in 2007, they reunited and announced their engagement in 2010. William proposed using Diana’s engagement ring. The couple married on April 29, 2011, in a globally televised ceremony viewed by millions.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, now have three children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. In addition to his royal duties, William has prioritized causes like mental health, youth initiatives, and environmental issues. In 2020, he launched the Earthshot Prize, a global initiative aimed at finding innovative environmental solutions. He has also worked to address homelessness and continues to serve as a leading figure in the modern monarchy.
For William’s 40th birthday, he was honored by the Royal Mint with the first coin that featured him alone. Designed by Thomas T. Docherty, the £5 coin featured William’s portrait on one side while the late Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the other side.
Alongside the image of William was his royal cypher, the letter W, and the number 40, while the edge was inscribed with “HRH The Duke of Cambridge.”
“The design strikes a balance between the fresh energy of His Royal Highness being a young dad with the ceremonial nature of his royal position,” Docherty said.
King Charles also shared a touching birthday tribute to him via Instagram. The post was captioned:
“Wishing The Duke of Cambridge a very happy 40th birthday! 🎂🎈”
The royal family’s Instagram also honored him with a post captioned:
“Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Cambridge! 🥳”
On June 21, 2023, the royal family Instagram account celebrated his 41st birthday – his first as Prince of Wales – with the message:

Us Weekly reported that William marked the occasion by stepping out of his comfort zone. Friends took him to a nightclub – a rare move for the future king. A source reported that though hesitant at first, he “loosened up and cut a rug,” dancing and enjoying drinks with longtime friends Guy Pelly and James Meade.
The fun didn’t end there. William also had a “special dinner with the kids,” joined by his wife, Catherine.
Westminster Abbey honored the day by ringing a traditional chorus of bells. The Abbey posted on X:
“Wishing HRH The Prince of Wales a very happy birthday today!”
The tradition of ringing bells became quite rare in 2023 because of the pandemic. But before that, it was an annual tradition whenever a senior royal turned a year older.
On June 21, 2024, Prince William celebrated his 42nd birthday by attending Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert at Wembley Stadium with his three children. Watching from a private suite, the family enjoyed the show, and a clip of William dancing to “Shake It Off” went viral on social media. The evening ended with a backstage selfie featuring the Prince, his kids, and Swift herself, adding a playful, modern twist to the royal birthday.
Earlier, Princess Catherine posted a sweet birthday tribute on social media, sharing a candid photo she took of William and their children jumping on a beach. Her caption read:
“Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much! Cx.”
In keeping with royal tradition, the bells of Westminster Abbey rang at 1 p.m. to mark the future king’s birthday.
As of now, no official details have been shared about how Prince William plans to celebrate his 43rd birthday on June 21, 2025. Whatever the occasion holds, we extend our warmest wishes for a joyful and memorable day!
