This year marks what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday. The Princess of Wales died in a tragic car accident on Aug. 31, 1997, but her memory and legacy have been carried on by her two sons Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana was the “people’s princess,” as she was very relatable and always sweet to everyone she met. With such impeccable style and undeniable grace, Diana was easily beloved by many.

William and Harry have spoken nothing but kind and endearing words about their mother and have done their best to honor her. The brothers have also joined forces to come together to unveil a statue of Diana on July 1, 2021 in a celebration of what would have been her 60th birthday.

Here are eight of William and Harry’s most heartwarming quotes about their mother.

1. Celebrating Diana

This year, the royal family has decided to celebrate Diana with a statue in her honor. Back in 2007, a benefit concert was held on what would have been her 46th birthday as a grandiose celebration for the late princess. “We wanted to represent exactly what our mother would have wanted,” William said. “The church service alone isn’t enough. We wanted to have this big concert, full of energy, full of fun and happiness.” William continued, “We know that’s what she would have wanted. On her birthday as well, it’s got to be the best birthday present she’s ever had.”

2. Overcoming Loss

“Losing your mother at such a young age does end up shaping your life massively, of course it does,” Harry said. “And now I find myself trying to be there and give advice to other people who are in similar positions.” Harry was only 12 years old when his mother died in a tragic car accident.

3. Cherished Memories

“Initially, there is a sense of profound shock and disbelief that this could ever happen to you,” William said. “Real grief often does not hit home until much later. For many it is a grief never entirely lost.” Losing his mother has impacted William in many ways. “Life is altered as you know it, and not a day goes past without you thinking about the one you have lost,” he said. “I know that over time it is possible to learn to live with what has happened, and with the passing of years, to retain or rediscover cherished memories.”

4. Diana As A Grandmother

In 2016, Harry said, “I hope she’s looking down (at our family) with tears in her eyes being incredibly proud of what we’ve established. I’m sure she’s longing for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again… but I hope that everything we do privately and officially, that it makes her proud.” Since then, he and his wife Meghan Markle have had two children together.

5. New Mother’s Day Experience

While Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate all the wonderful qualities your mom has and to honor her for the work she’s done as a parent, it’s a different day for people without a mother. Diana’s legacy still lives on today, but Mother’s Day has been difficult for William. “Losing a close family member is one of the hardest experiences that anyone can ever endure,” he said. “Never being able to say the word ‘Mummy’ again in your life sounds like a small thing. I too have felt —and still feel—the emptiness on such a day as Mother’s Day.”

6. A Proud Mom

Although Diana is no longer with her sons, William and Harry have lived their life in honor of her memory and hope that she would be proud of everything they’ve accomplished as members of the royal family. “It’s a huge shame she’s not here. But I hope she’d be incredibly proud of what we managed to achieve,” Harry said.

7. Never Forgotten

British culture has been incredibly impacted by the work Diana did when she was still alive, and William and Harry have made sure to never let their mother’s contributions go unnoticed or be forgotten. “We will do everything we can to make sure she’s never forgotten, and carry on all of the special gifts and such that she had and that she portrayed when she was alive,” Harry said. “I hope that a lot of my mother’s talents are shown in the work that I do.”

8. She’s Always With Them

William married Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011 in a beautiful ceremony that was broadcast to the world. Even though his mother wasn’t physically present, William could still feel her spirit with him on his special day. “When it came to the wedding, I did really feel that she was there. You know, there was times when you look to someone or something for strength and I very much felt she was there for me,” he said.
