Prince William And Kate Middleton Limit Children's Screen Time And Read Stories Before Bed

Getting children ready for bed can be a hassle. Every parent has most likely dealt with some challenges when it comes to tucking their little ones in for the night, as many children can be restless, antsy or just insist that they simply aren’t tired yet. However, making sure children get a good night’s sleep is important for their development — not to mention that it’s also a nice way for parents to get a bit of peace and quiet.

However, this task is oftentimes easier said than done, which is something that even the royal family has come to learn. Prince William and Kate Middleton do their best to establish a bedtime routine for their three children to follow. As of now, their kids are all still under the age of 10: Prince George is 8, Charlotte is 6 and Louis is 3.

Raising kids this age can be tricky, but fortunately, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have the help of their children’s nanny, Maria Borrallo. She first started working for the family back in 2014 to help take care of George and has continued to be an important part of all three children’s lives.

Making sure that the kids get to bed at the proper time is just one of Borrallo’s many responsibilities. However, that doesn’t mean that bedtime has to be boring. The Cambridge children are known for their love of the arts and entertainment, but they really enjoy a good old-fashioned bedtime story. Read on to find out more about how the Cambridge family helps ensure their children have a pleasant bedtime routine, which just happens to be adorable.

Using Their Resources

With the help of Borrallo, William and Kate have been able to create a great bedtime routine to make sure that their kids get the proper amount of sleep they need. According to Town & Country, Borrallo first started working for the family in 2014, taking on the task of caring for then-8-month-old George.

Borrallo studied at Norland College, which is known for training some of the best caregivers in the United Kingdom. Along with traditional childcare skills, the nannies at Norland also learn techniques in cooking, sewing, self-defense and first-aid training, according to Town & Country.

Borrallo, who was born in Spain, is also teaching the children Spanish. According to PEOPLE, George knows some basics of the language, and Charlotte began learning some Spanish back in 2017. More importantly, Borrallo allows the kids to be kids. Town & Country reported that she’s actually the one responsible for some of the cute pictures of the children, including one of George peeking out a window at a parade in 2015.

However, that doesn’t mean that Borrallo is not stern when needed; she ensures that the children stick to a bedtime routine. According to Cambridge News, the nanny makes sure that the royal children are all in bed at 7 p.m. They are also given limited screen time, which is monitored by their parents.

However, William admitted that it’s “quite difficult” at times to find a good balance. He also talked about how parents will also need to adjust to finding new ways to adapt to a technologically-advanced world while still making sure their children are engaged with them.

Sparking Their Interests

“This generation (is) going to be the first generation to grow up fully immersed in mobile phones, social media, lots of stuff,” William said. “And yet our generation, the older generation, the parent generation, we’re completely left at, ‘How do we deal with this? Where do we go to? Where do you learn about how to look after your children’s digital world?’”

Despite their routine, George, Charlotte and Louis are not entirely opposed to their nighttime ritual, as it often involves a bedtime story. According to Tatler, the Cambridge children love being read to before they go to sleep — even their eldest son still enjoys being read to.

William recalled a time he met Julia Donaldson, author of “Room On The Broom,” and how much it meant to him since it’s one of his children’s favorite books. “I read this to our children all the time,” he said, according to Hello! Magazine. When he met Donaldson, he asked her, “Do you realize how many parents you have saved at bedtime?”

William also has a few other recommendations for parents in need of a good bedtime story to read to their kids. “David Walliams also does good books for children — for a little bit older children I think,” the Duke of Cambridge said. “I’ve read one and it was really, really good.”

It’s reassuring for parents to know that even the royal family sometimes struggles with getting their kids to limit their screen time and instead get ready for bed with a nice bedtime story. However, with the right book, there’s hope that children will have an easier time drifting off into dreamland.
