The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, retired from official public duties almost three years ago in August 2017. Since then, it has been very rare to see him at royal events. However, on Wednesday, July 22, Prince Philip is due to transfer his military role as Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles to the Duchess of Cornwall in what will be a very special public appearance.

The 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh will attend the initial ceremony at Windsor Castle but will not be in the same location as 73-year-old Camilla, who will be at Clarence House, where the ceremony will continue, reports The Daily Mail.

According to the International Business Times, Buckingham Palace confirmed:

"The ceremony will begin at Windsor Castle where four Buglers, of The Band and Bugles of The Rifles, will sound The Rifles Assembly call upon the arrival of the Duke of Edinburgh. The ceremony will continue at Highgrove House, where the arrival of the Duchess of Cornwall will be marked by four Buglers of The Band and Bugles of The Rifles sounding The Rifles Assembly. Her Royal Highness will be addressed by The Rifles' Colonel Commandant, General Sir Patrick Sanders, who will welcome The Duchess as the new Colonel-in-Chief."

Prince Philip retired from royal duties in August 2017, at the age of 96. Since then he has only been spotted in public a few times. Most notably at royal weddings, such as that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

His most recent public engagement saw him accompany the Queen to the wedding of their granddaughter Princess Beatrice, as USA Today reports. Princess Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on Friday, July 17th at a private intimate ceremony at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

The Duke turned 99 this June. The Palace marked this momentous occasion by sharing an image of Her Majesty and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle. Prince Philip has been spending his retirement by splitting his time between Windsor, in Berkshire, and Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate.

He has been Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles since it was formed in 2007, but his history with the regiment goes way back to 1953, according to USA Today. The Duchess of Cornwall took up her position as Royal Colonel of 4th Battalion The Rifles in 2007, and now she will be at the helm of the regiment in what will be an important new role for her.
