Ozzy Osbourne, born John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne in Birmingham, England, on Dec. 3, 1948, discovered music early and rose to fame in the 1970s as Black Sabbath’s frontman. In detail, his life blended turbulence and trailblazing. After struggling as a teen, he joined Terence “Geezer” Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward in 1968; their group evolved from Polka Tulk Blues to Earth, then finally Black Sabbath. Persistent substance abuse fractured the lineup, and Ozzy was dismissed in 1979.

With help from Don Arden, he launched a powerhouse solo career. His debut, “Blizzard of Oz,” set the tone, followed by “Bark at the Moon” (1983), “The Ultimate Sin” (1986), and “No Rest for the Wicked” (1988), all multi‑platinum in the United States. He also met Sharon Osbourne in 1971; after Black Sabbath, she became his manager, partner, and the steady force behind his reinvention. The “Bark at the Moon” singer later embraced family life, including grandfatherhood.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019, the rock icon died at 76 on July 22, 2025. Across nearly six decades, Ozzy remained a defining voice of heavy metal, leaving a catalogue and persona that shaped the genre and influenced generations of artists. His legacy endures on stages worldwide.

Ozzy and Sharon’s working relationship blossomed into romance, and they married in 1982 after his divorce from Thelma Riley, with whom he shares children Jessica and Louis Osbourne, as well as her son, Elliot Kingsley.

Married for over 40 years, Sharon shared their secret in 2023, telling E! News: “We’re both oddballs. I might look quite normal, you know, the way I dress, but normal is not a word I use often.” She added: “We’re two oddballs and were two wild young people that found each other.”

Ozzy and Sharon welcomed daughters Aimee Osbourne in 1983 and Kelly Osbourne in 1984, and son Jack Osbourne in 1985. Their family gained global fame with MTV’s hit reality TV show “The Osbournes.”

In 2011, the original Black Sabbath, led by Ozzy, announced a reunion for a final album and tour. Their last album, “13,” was released in 2013, followed by a farewell tour, The End, which concluded in their hometown of Birmingham, England, in 2017.

Osbourne also embraced his role as a grandfather. Son Jack welcomed his first daughter, Pearl Clementine, in 2012, followed by Andy in 2015, Minnie Theodora in 2018, and Maple Artemis Osbourne with wife Aree Gearhart in 2022. In 2023, Sharon shared a photo of Ozzy making silly faces to entertain their daughter Kelly’s son, Sidney Wilson.

Despite his family’s joy, Ozzy battled health problems. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2019 and dealing with multiple spinal surgeries after a fall worsened old injuries, he announced in February 2023 that he was retiring from touring. Calling the decision “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share,” he admitted to Rolling Stone UK:

“At best I’ve got 10 years left and when you’re older, time picks up speed.”

Reflecting on stepping away from music, he said:

“It’s been like saying farewell to the best relationship of my life.”

He continued:

“At the start of my illness, when I stopped touring, I was really pissed off with myself, the doctors and the world. But as time has gone on, I’ve just gone, ‘Well, maybe I’ve just got to accept that fact.’“

On July 22, 2025, weeks after his final performance with Black Sabbath, Ozzy died at 76. The Osbourne family said in a statement:

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.”
