Prince Harry Turns 42 With His Family Back In Britain & New Chapter Taking Shape

The Duke of Sussex is celebrating his birthday in the middle of one of the biggest changes his family has made since leaving royal life behind.

Prince Harry turns 42 today, just weeks after returning to Britain with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, following six years based primarily in California. The move has put Harry’s relationship with his home country back in the spotlight while giving his children a closer connection to their British roots.

Born Henry Charles Albert David at St Mary’s Hospital in London on Sept. 15, 1984, Harry is the younger son of King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales. He spent a decade in the Armed Forces and completed two tours in Afghanistan before ending operational duties in 2015.

Harry’s life has changed dramatically since then. He married Meghan in 2018, and the couple welcomed Archie in 2019 and Lilibet in 2021. In January 2020, they announced they would step back as working members of the royal family, eventually establishing their main home in Montecito, California.

Now, Britain is once again becoming part of everyday family life.

The Sussexes arrived in the U.K. on Aug. 26 and have established a private home base while retaining their California residence. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, have also begun attending school in Britain, a major milestone for children who have spent most of their lives in the United States.

Meghan recently offered a glimpse of that new family life, sharing a video of the children enjoying the British countryside with their parents. The footage included biking, fishing and boating, while Archie’s noticeably British accent quickly caught attention.

For Harry, the return is about more than geography. His charitable work has kept him connected to Britain, particularly through the Invictus Games and WellChild. He founded the Invictus Games in 2014, and he has been a patron of WellChild since 2007. His latest U.K. schedule includes the Invictus Spirit Awards and the WellChild Awards, underscoring how much of his public work remains focused on veterans and seriously ill children.

At the same time, Harry’s return has highlighted the complicated question of his place within the monarchy.

On Sept. 7, King Charles formally reaffirmed that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family and private citizens with commercial and charitable interests. The clarification came shortly after the Sussexes returned to Britain and reportedly surprised their team.

Despite the tension, Harry’s birthday arrives during a period of renewed family contact. He and Meghan have maintained an independent life. Still, their decision to establish a British base creates more opportunities for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know the country where their father grew up.

The move also carries a deeply personal dimension for Harry. Britain is the country he has repeatedly said he misses, even as his relationship with the royal institution has remained strained.

At 42, the Duke of Sussex therefore finds himself in a curious position: firmly outside the working monarchy, yet increasingly present in the country and causes that have shaped his identity.

And with his children now beginning their own British chapter, Harry’s birthday may mark the start of a very different kind of homecoming.
