After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed that they would be stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family back in January, many thought that Prince Harry could lose his place in the line of succession for the throne as a consequence.
However, even though the couple will be financially independent of the British Monarchy, Prince Harry will still retain his position in line to the throne. Royal historian and author Marlene Koenig told Royal Central that although Harry and Meghan are moving to North America, royal succession to the throne will not change.

Talking to Royal Central, historian Marlene Koenig said that the succession to the throne was based on legislation and therefore Harry will retain his position in line. Referencing other historical situations, Marlene said:
"Edward VIII could not abdicate without an act of Parliament."

Marlene continued to clarify why Harry would retain his place by saying:
“When the first Duke of Sussex (Prince Augustus, George III’s son) and the Duke of Cambridge (Prince George, son of Prince Adolphus) married women in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act, they did not lose their rights, but their wives and children could not their rank and children did not have dynastic rights to the throne and sons could not inherit the peerage.”

In a statement the couple issued on their website, Harry and Meghan said that they will officially step down as senior members of the Royal Family on April 1st. They also gave some details about changes that will incur as a consequence to the exit, including that they would stop using the word "Royal" as a part of their branding including social media accounts, charities, and their website.
