Prince Harry Talks About The "Most Important Thing" Princess Diana Did For Him

Last month, Prince Harry released a statement towards the public condemning the “ruthless campaign” against his wife by the British tabloid press. The Duke of Sussex drew comparisons to his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, saying, “I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

In a tell-all biography titled Conversations with the Prince by Angela Levin, Harry revealed that these "powerful sources" were something his mother tried very hard to protect him from. This would ultimately end up being the "most important thing" she's ever done for him.

In the book, Levin went into detail about Prince Harry's relationship with his mother, saying keeping him safe was "the most important thing she ever did for him."

“It was one of many poignant moments during our conversation," Levin wrote, as cited by Express. "This one goes straight to the heart of every child, rich or poor."

“Children need parents who make them feel safe and give them the right environment in which to grow and flourish," she added. "They also need to feel they are accepted and loved for who they are."

“Without his mother, who died when he was twelve years old, Harry has had a really tough time.”

Princess Diana's death happened just after her extremely public divorce to Prince Charles, which saw the family come under media scrutiny for many years to come.

Levin then went on to explain how his mother's death changed the Prince, with him eventually turning to some self-destructive habits as he grew older.

“Her death changed Harry from being an adorable mischievous boy who was beginning to comprehend what it meant to be third in line to the throne and forever one large step behind his big brother, into a wilful impulsive pre-teen who, as he grew, behaved badly, rarely handed in his schoolwork on time, drank and smoked too much, and connected with too many unsuitable girls,” she wrote.

In October, Britain’s ITV released a documentary about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s African tour, titled “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey,” for which the royal couple invited journalists to follow them on their 10-day journey in the southern part of the continent. The documentary saw both the Sussexes get raw and honest about their personal struggles with the scrutiny they’ve come under by British tabloids, which prompted them to seek legal action that same month.

In the documentary, Prince Harry got candid about his ongoing struggle with the media, admitting that the death of his mother is still a “wound that festers” 22 years later.

“I think being part of this family, in this role and this job, every single time I see a camera, every time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back,” Prince Harry said.

“So with that respect, it’s the worse reminder of her life as opposed to the best,” he added.

In an attempt to fight back at the media scrutiny and protect their family, the Duchess of Sussex launched legal action against UK based media Associated Newspapers, citing the “misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018” as her claims against the publishers. Prince Harry then released a statement explaining why the Sussexes have chosen to initiate the lawsuit.
