Prince Harry Talks About The Dangers Of 'Unconscious’ Racism In Interview

Prince Harry recently sat down for an interview with Dr Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most famous primatologists and conservationists in the world.

The two sat for a chat at the Duke and Duchesses home for the September issue for Vogue UK, which was guest-edited by none other than the Duchess herself.

Meghan Markle is the first woman of color to become part of the Royal Family, something that has afforded her both appraisal and scrutiny from the public.

The criticism Meghan had to endure was so severe that the Prince had to release a statement urging the media to back off.

“Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

The Duke brought up the matter of racism once more when speaking to Dr. Goodall.

“What I love about your work is that you focus on the younger generation,” he said. “[When] you start to peel away all the layers, all the taught behaviour, the learned behaviour, the experienced behaviour, you start to peel all that away and at the end of the day, we’re all humans.”

“Especially if you get little kids together, there’s no difference! They don’t notice, “My skin’s white, mine’s black,” until somebody tells them,” she added.

The Prince then went on to explain that racism does not only come with adulthood but is often deeply embedded into a person through their childhood, upbringing and even ancestry; something people ought to be aware of.

“But again, stigma is handed down from generation to generation, your perspective on the world and on life and on people is something that is taught to you,” Said Harry. “It’s learned from your family, learned from the older generation, or from advertising, from your environment. And, therefore, you have to be able to have a wider perspective.”

“It’s the same as an unconscious bias – something which so many people don’t understand, why they feel the way that they do.”
