Prince Harry Reveals He ‘Would Like’ To Have Charles And William Back In His Life

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shocked the world by announcing they were stepping back as senior royals in early 2020. They have since relocated to the United States, where they live with their two children, son Archie and daughter Lilibet. Although they retained their HRH titles, they would no longer receive financial support from the palace or undertake any royal duties as representatives of the monarch. Their sharp criticism of the royal family's culture in the now infamous Oprah Winfrey interview of 2021 was met with some opprobrium around the world, but the couple also found a lot of support.

Since relocating to Montecito in Santa Barbara, California, the Sussex family has been busy setting up their own brand, Archewell. Meghan began hosting a podcast called “Archetypes,” a podcast that works to “investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that try to hold women back.”

The couple also embarked on a journey to document their lives since their departure from the grand halls of Buckingham Palace in the Netflix series “Harry & Meghan.” The show chronicles the pair’s romantic progression to their marriage in May 2018, as well as their experiences under intense public scrutiny. It also delves into their relationships with members of the royal family and the impact and strains the institution has put on their life together.

On top of this, Harry has revealed more about the royal family in his memoir “Spare,” which was released on Jan. 10, 2023. In promoting his book, Harry has done interviews, sharing even more information about his thoughts on his family – and the Duke of Sussex has said that he wants his father and brother back in his life.

Prince William and Prince Harry are the sons of King Charles III and the late Princess Diana. The duo has been unable to escape constant comparisons. While they were once close, Harry and William have drifted apart in their adult years.

Harry’s Netflix documentary offered insight into the explosive fallout from his and Meghan’s decision to make their exit from the royal family. In the fifth episode of “Harry & Meghan,” Harry recounted the turmoil of those days. He said he had wanted to gather the senior royals, including his father, brother, grandmother and wife, together for a meeting to discuss the situation but was rejected. Harry said it was only after Meghan had left the country that an emergency meeting was called between him, William, Charles and Queen Elizabeth II in Sandringham. Harry said it was then that the family showed him how they truly felt.

“It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that just simply weren’t true, and my grandmother quietly sit there and take it all in,” he recalled.

“But you have to understand that from the family’s perspectives, especially from (Elizabeth’s), there are ways of doing things. And her ultimate mission and goal, responsibility, is the institution… she’s going to go on the advice that she’s given,” Harry continued, adding that the “saddest part” was the “wedge created between myself and my brother.”

He added, “Part of that I get – that’s his inheritance and, to some extent, it’s already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of the institution.”

This wasn’t the only time that Harry spoke about his family’s behavior. Following the controversial interview with Winfrey, Metro UK reported that Harry's relationship with his father hit "rock bottom" after a "complete communication breakdown." Charles was thought to be "very hurt" after the two-hour special aired, especially because Harry accused Charles of no longer taking his calls. Sources claimed that Harry was "forced to write letters" to his father because of the lack of communication.

Unfortunately, Harry’s relationship with his family hasn’t gotten better over the years. While promoting his memoir “Spare,” Harry has done interviews revealing that he misses his family, specifically William and Charles.

According to AP News, he said he wants “a family, not an institution.” Speaking with ITV News, he said:

“I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back.”

Sadly, Harry’s wishes may not come true, as he shared, “They’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.” The Duke of Sussex added, “They feel as though it’s better to keep us somehow as the villains.” However, it was unclear who Harry was referring to.

He added, “It never needed to be this way.”

However, during his interview with Anderson Cooper, Harry talked about how his family had betrayed him:

“Every single time I’ve tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife. When we’re being told for the last six years we can’t put a statement out to protect you, but you do it for other members of the family, there becomes a point when silence is betrayal.”

With more people indulging in Harry’s Netflix series and memoir, there’s no telling what is to come for his future relationship with William and Charles.
