Prince Harry Revealed How He And Meghan Met, Their First Date And More In New Series ‘Harry & Meghan’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shocked the world by announcing they were stepping back as senior royals in early 2020. They have since relocated to the United States, where they live with their two children, son Archie and daughter Lilibet. Although they retained their HRH titles, they would no longer receive financial support from the palace or undertake any royal duties as representatives of the monarch. Their sharp criticism of the royal family's culture in the now infamous Oprah Winfrey interview of 2021 was met with some opprobrium around the world, but the couple also found a lot of support.

Since relocating to Montecito in Santa Barbara, California, the Sussexes have been busy setting up their own brand, Archewell. Meghan began hosting a podcast called “Archetypes” that “dives into the labels that try to hold women back,” while Harry has been working on his memoir, entitled “Spare,” and described as being “full of insight, revelation, self-examination and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”

The couple also embarked on a journey to document their lives since their departure from the grand halls of Buckingham Palace in the Netflix series “Harry & Meghan.” The show chronicles the pair’s progression from the “secret, early days of their unexpected romance” to marriage in May 2018, as well as their experiences under intense public scrutiny.

The first three episodes of “Harry & Meghan” has given the world a better understanding of how the couple met and the dynamics of their relationship — a huge aspect of their life that has been eclipsed by the controversies that plagued their marriage.

The couple reportedly started dating back in the middle of 2016, with the two of them making their first public appearance a year later at the 2017 Invictus Games. And like most normal couples nowadays, the two met on social media.

“Meghan and I met over Instagram. I was scrolling through my feed, and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat … with doggy ears. That was the first thing. I was like, ‘Who is that?’” he said in the documentary.

Meghan, who was informed of the prince’s interest, stalked him in return, only to be amused as Harry’s Instagram page contained nature photos of the time he was spending in Africa. After a few texts and conversations, the two had their first date at Soho House in London.

While it might be expected for a royal to be prompt and early, Prince Harry was the complete opposite. Meghan revealed that Harry was actually late on their very first date.

“But he kept texting. He was like, ‘I’m in traffic. I’m so sorry. I’m in traffic. I’m so sorry.’ ... Then I didn’t know him, so I was like, ‘Oh, is this what he does? Got it.’ And I was just not interested in that,” Meghan said.

On the other hand, Harry, who was really stuck in traffic, was “panicking,” “freaking out,” and “sweating,” and arrived on his very first date as “a hot, sweaty, red ball of mess.” But despite this, Meghan waited and proceeded to enjoy the rest of the evening with Harry.

Interestingly, Harry and Meghan are both children of divorced families. At some point, Harry lamented this predicament, but in the documentary series, he made it clear that this became a common ground for him and his wife.

“I think most kids who are the product of divorced parents have a lot in common, no matter what your background is,” he reflected.

Elsewhere in the interview, Prince Harry made a significant comparison on how Meghan was actually a lot like his late mother, Princess Diana. He alluded to this similarity when he recalled the early months of his relationship with Meghan, and how he was scared by the idea of how the paparazzi and media would treat their personal space as theirs too.

“When I got to meet M, I was terrified of her being driven away by the media — the same media that had driven so many other people away from me,” he confessed. “I knew that the only way that this could possibly work is by keeping it quiet for as long as possible.”

Like Princess Diana, the Duchess of Sussex was subjected to a lot of scrutiny by the British media. But their similarities do not stop there, as Prince Harry attested in the documentary.

“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her,” he elaborated. “I accept that there will be people around the world who fundamentally disagree with what I’ve done and how I’ve done it, but I knew that I had to do everything I could to protect my family. Especially after what happened to my mum. I didn’t want history to repeat itself.”
