On Feb. 9, 2025, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were presented with custom jerseys by Team Nigeria while attending a wheelchair basketball event in Vancouver. In addition to their own shirts, the couple received green jerseys with the names “Archie” and “Lilibet” for their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The presentation took place after the United States vs. Nigeria wheelchair basketball game, where the American team triumphed. In Oct. 2022, Meghan, 43, shared that she has Nigerian heritage, a connection she explored further during a visit to Nigeria with the Prince, 40, in May 2024. During their visit to Nigeria in 2024, the Duke and Duchess met several athletes competing in the 2025 Invictus Games in Canada.

The Invictus Games 2025 started on Feb. 8, 2025, and ended on Feb. 16, 2025, in Vancouver and Whistler. The event kicked off with an opening ceremony at BC Place in Vancouver, where Coldplay’s Chris Martin gave a shout-out to Harry and humorously cracked a joke at his own expense. Martin recounted: “When he called me, he said, ‘I’ve called every other musician in the world. They’ve all said they’re not available, so I have to call you.’ And I said, ‘Your Royal Holiness, I’m honored.’”

In a conversation with PEOPLE, Derrick Cobbinah, the Nigerian team manager, explained the significance of the jerseys, stressing that they were not only a souvenir from the Nigerian team for the children but also a gesture to encourage Meghan to show her support for Nigeria.

Cobbinah recounted Meghan’s reaction: “We did one for him and one for M and for the kids,” adding, “They said they would be excited to have them. She was very, very excited.”

Cobbinah said Alvin Atsegwasi, co-founder of Africa Unconquered, personally handed the shirt to Meghan. He added that the Duchess supported Nigeria throughout the basketball game, showing her enthusiasm for the team during the event. Presenting the jerseys highlighted Meghan’s newfound connection to Nigeria and her and Prince Harry’s ongoing support for causes that resonated with them.

Cobbinah expressed hope that Meghan would wear the jersey, saying:

“We are hoping she wears the jersey and sits with the family and friends and supports us later.”

He also shared that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were enjoying their time in Canada, noting:

“Them being here brings a lot of positive morale to everyone. You can feel the energy in the room when they’re around.”

He continued:

“They spend their time talking to each and every competitor and are listening to their story. Everybody has an amazing story and amazing journey to share.”

In January 2025, the Invictus movement reached a milestone in Nigeria, with the first steps taken toward building an Invictus Games center for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel.

Cobbinah, who is also the CEO and co-founder of the veterans’ charity Africa Unconquered, elaborated on his athletes’ journey, saying:

“Now, it is as much about the transition that they have been through to get here – for them, 99% it is about the healing process for them.”

He added that the Nigerian team now viewed their fellow competitors as “their family now. This is their family.”

Cobbinah also commented on the cold temperatures, saying:

“This is our first winter games. For Nigeria, it is a bit cold here! The weather is not that great for people from Nigeria! We are trying, and we are here. We are enjoying it. But it is also part of the healing process for the competitors.”
