Prince Harry has always shared a deep and affectionate bond with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant presence through every stage of his life, offering quiet guidance as he navigated the challenges of royal duty and public scrutiny. Those close to the family have often spoken about the understanding between grandmother and grandson, a relationship built on trust and mutual respect that remained strong even as Harry charted his own path.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, has returned to the United Kingdom for a series of charity events that remain close to his heart. Fresh from California, where he lives with Meghan Markle and their two children, he is scheduled to attend the annual WellChild Awards and visit organizations he has supported for years.

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, in the King George VI Memorial Chapel within the grounds of Windsor Castle. The chapel also holds the remains of her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, as well as her sister, Princess Margaret. For Prince Harry, Windsor is especially meaningful. It is where he and Meghan Markle celebrated their wedding in May 2018, and where he quietly visited in 2023 to honor his grandmother.

This return to the U.K. follows a turbulent year for the prince. In April 2025, he traveled to London to attend court in an attempt to restore his official security arrangements, a case he ultimately lost. Relations remain strained with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William, as well as with Princess Catherine. Harry has not seen his father in person since February 2024, soon after the King revealed he was receiving treatment for cancer. Still, he has been open about wanting to heal the rift. He told BBC News in May 2025:

“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.”

Hopes for a reunion briefly grew in July 2025 when aides representing Harry and King Charles met in London, their first formal contact in many months. Upon his arrival in the U.K., a source told PEOPLE the prince is in a “positive” mood and “in a really good headspace,” adding that he was looking forward to reconnecting with his charities and the causes close to his heart. During this visit, Prince Harry quietly went to the burial place of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, where he paid his respects and laid a wreath of flowers, PEOPLE confirmed.
