Prince Harry Has Spent Lots Of Time With Surrogate Dad David Foster Since Moving To The United States

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced to the world on Jan. 8, 2020, that they would step down as senior working members of the British royal family in a move popularly dubbed "Megxit." By the spring of 2020, the transition was complete, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were no longer carrying out royal duties.

In March 2021, Meghan and Harry sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that not only touched upon their lives post-Megxit but also revealed some of the struggles and issues the couples had surrounding Meghan marrying into the family, their son Archie and more. The interview also covered the familiar topic of mental health. Meghan critiqued the British monarchy as an institution, Harry talked about relationship tensions with his father and brother, and together, the pair discussed personal security. Since the big interview, even more information about Harry's feelings regarding the royal family has come out.

After Prince Harry and Meghan left the UK and first moved to Canada before eventually settling in the United States, music icon David Foster and his wife, Katharine McPhee, were very welcoming of the royal couple and developed a strong bond with them.

On many occasions, the media has photographed Prince Harry and Foster hanging out together along with their wives, who apparently went to the same school and were childhood friends before taking on different careers in the entertainment industry.

Harry, who has been reported as having a strained relationship with his father, King Charles III, seemed to have taken solace in his “surrogate” father, Foster, who had been nothing but helpful during their initial emigration to Canada. Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their departure from their royal responsibilities, rumors abounded that there were tensions in the royal family. That was confirmed after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released their controversial, tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. The interview fanned the public’s curiosity about Harry’s experiences living in the public eye and the issues found in the royal family’s dirty laundry.

According to the Daily Beast, a close friend of Camilla, Queen Consort, revealed that King Charles won't be likely to invite Harry and Meghan to his coronation should the Duke of Sussex decide to attack Camilla in his yet-to-be-published controversial memoir.

Despite the estrangement that the couple had reportedly felt from the royal family, they had found friendship with Meghan’s childhood friend, McPhee, and her musician husband, Foster

In 2019, Foster married 38-year-old singer and actress McPhee. The two had been dating in 2017 but first met all the way back in 2006, when Foster was McPhee’s mentor on ABC’s hit show “American Idol.”

McPhee and Meghan went to the same middle and high school together. Although they weren’t necessarily classmates, the “Smash” alum did a few theater productions together with the Duchess of Sussex.

Lending a helping hand to the royal couple, Foster shared with the Daily Mail in June 2022 his experience in arranging a new residence in Canada for the royal couple.

“I felt honoured that I was able to help Meghan there because I'm a Canadian, and we're a commonwealth country. It's important to us, so I grew up with that kind of sentiment,” Foster told the outlet.

The two couples’ friendship has grown throughout the years, with the public taking more notice of Harry’s closeness with Foster, who is a year older than his father.

After helping the two settle in Canada, Foster and McPhee were also very helpful when Harry and Meghan decided to go to the United States for good. The Grammy-winning music icon helped the Sussexes sell their $14.1 million Canadian dollar (approximately USD 10.4 million) mansion before moving to the US.

Speaking to Access Hollywood in 2020, McPhee gushed about Foster and Harry’s relationship:

“My husband has a really, really beautiful relationship with Harry. They're so cute. They're like father and son.”

While McPhee was pregnant with their first child in 2020, they celebrated the good news along with the royal couple in a rare outing in California. Meghan and Harry were in attendance among a very intimate circle of friends of the celebrity couple, the Daily Mail reported.

In June 2022, Foster and Harry were photographed together hanging out at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. Many publications, including OK Magazine and Mirror, have widely referred to Foster either as Harry’s “other father” or “surrogate dad,” as the two emulate a father-and-son relationship.

In another Daily Mail report, Foster, who is only a year older than King Charles, has been described as a “father figure” to Prince Harry, who has been reported to have an embattled relationship with his own dad.

The publication also reported at the time that Foster had planned to throw Prince Harry a celebration of some sort in 2020 when the royal prince turned 36 in Los Angeles, which also marked his first birthday since “Megxit.”

“David wants to make it special for Harry but also keep it casual and low-key with some fine wine, great food and intimate company,” a source close to the Daily Mail reported. "He is setting aside the fire pit at his home plus the whole outdoor area, which security will cordon off."
