Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Are Contemplating Naming Their Daughter After A Member Of The Family

On Valentine's day in Feb. 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they are expecting their second child. Sharing the happy news on social media, the radiant couple looked joyful in a gorgeous black and white photograph that was able to evoke many emotions in the viewers.

The news came after Markle announced that she had suffered a miscarriage in July 2020 in an op-ed piece in the New York Times from November 2020. The couple already shares a son, Archie, who has come to resemble his father in many ways, much like how Prince Harry resembles his grandfather.

Reacting to the news, Buckingham Palace released the following statement on Sunday, February 14, "Her Majesty, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and entire family are 'delighted' and wish them well." According to Insider, it has been confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's second baby, and Archie's first sibling, will be a girl.

Since this announcement, speculation has run wild about the new bundle of joy's name-to-be. While many names are in the running, experts and royal commentators have debated heavily about whether Diana could be a potential name choice.

Across betting websites in the United Kingdom, people have taken to guessing what the new baby girl's name will be, and while Diana is a top contender, there are many more that are in the mix. Though only time will tell what Meghan and Harry's daughter will be named, it hasn't stopped people from giving their best predictions. Read on to know more about what potential baby names are at the top of the list.

Opinions differ on whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will choose to honor Harry's mother by bestowing her name onto their daughter. From long-standing royal experts who have spent years covering and analyzing the royal family in the media to anonymous insider opinions, everybody seems to have something to say.

According to Huffington Post, Diana is the top contender by far across all betting sites in the UK. "Diana is the clear favorite in our market now, ever since Harry and Meghan confirmed that they could be having a baby girl," Harry Aitkenhead, spokesperson for the betting site Coral said in late March. “We are convinced it will feature somewhere in the name, going 5-1 that it is the new arrival’s first name.”

However, royal insiders doubt that Harry and Meghan will choose to name their daughter Diana. Page Six reported that one source was very clear about the fact that Diana would not even be in the running as a name, as the couple feared it would put too much media attention on their as of yet unborn child.

"They are highly unlikely to call their daughter Diana. Their biggest concern is that it would make her a bigger target for the media, and considerably increase public interest in the child's life. Whatever anybody thinks, Harry and Meghan do value their privacy and want to shield their children from the intense media pressure they have endured."

As Meghan has sued tabloids for invading her privacy in the past and paparazzi are thought to have been one of the contributing factors to Princess Diana's death, these concerns and fears might be well-founded.

Other royal fans believe that Harry and Meghan may gravitate towards a name starting from "A" like brother Archie. The top names for this include Alice, Alexandria, Allegra, Abigail and Anne.

Apart from "A" names, other top choices include Grace, Molly, Emma, Elizabeth, Greta, Isabella, Victoria and Emily. Some names that have lower odds but have still made the list are Doria, after Meghan's mother, as well as Kamala, Oprah, Camilla and Ivanka.

Prince Philip's death on April 9, 2021, has left the royal family in mourning. Some royal watchers are now also predicting that Harry and Meghan may choose to honor the late Philip, and especially Queen Elizabeth, by choosing a meaningful name for their daughter, who is due sometime in the summer.

Express UK reported that fans predict the name to be "Lily," which is a tribute to Elizabeth's nickname "Lilibet."

The queen's close family called her "Lilibet" after the very young princess was unable to pronounce her own name. The queen’s parents and grandparents adopted the adorable nickname, and it has remained her nickname ever since. Her late father, George VI, was once quoted as saying: "Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy."

However, no other royal family members apart from Philip and the queen’s parents have reportedly called her "Lilibet," which means that her sweet nickname may now no longer be used after Philip's death. While it is only a prediction and not an assumption that the queen's 12th great-grandchild may be called "Lily," it would certainly be a beautiful way to honor Elizabeth.
