Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have just announced that they are stepping back from their senior roles as members of the British Royal family.

Taking to their official Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex posted a statement announcing they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and “work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

The couple added that they will be splitting their time between the Prince’s native United Kingdom and North America and will be announcing the launch of their new charitable entity in the near future.

The move comes just days after the couple’s return from a six-week-long hiatus in Canada with their 8-month son Archie, where they spent Christmas with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland.

On Tuesday, the Duke and Duchess visited Canada's High Commissioner in London, her Excellency Janice Charette, as an expression of gratitude towards Canada for the hospitality they experienced during their visit.

Last November, Meghan Markle launched legal action against UK based media Associated Newspapers, citing the “misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018” as their claims against the publishers.

Her husband the Duke of Sussex immediately released a statement towards the public condemning the “ruthless campaign” against his wife by the British tabloid press, drawing comparisons to his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.
