Prince George’s School Choice Continues Time-Honored Royal Tradition

A major milestone has been reached for Prince George. As the eldest child of Prince William and Princess Catherine prepared to enter his teenage years, the royal family officially confirmed where the future king would continue his education.
Kensington Palace announced that George will attend Eton College beginning in September 2026. The decision came as the 12-year-old completed his final year at Lambrook School in Berkshire, where he had been studying alongside his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, since the family’s move to Windsor in 2022.
The announcement ended years of speculation surrounding George’s next school. Royal watchers had long debated whether he would follow in his father’s footsteps or choose a different path. Marlborough College, Catherine’s former school, was frequently mentioned as a possible option, leading some to believe the family might break with tradition.
Instead, George will continue a royal educational route that has already played a significant role in his father’s life.
Before Lambrook, George attended Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk and later enrolled at St Thomas’s Battersea in London. Over the years, William and Catherine have worked hard to balance royal responsibilities with giving their children as normal a childhood as possible.
That balancing act becomes more challenging as George gets older and moves closer to the responsibilities that will eventually come with being king.
The choice of secondary school has therefore been closely watched, not just because of George’s future role within the monarchy, but also because it offers insight into how his parents hope to prepare him for it.

Now that the decision has finally been made, one thing is clear: George will be following a familiar path.
This September, he will officially join Eton College, the prestigious all-boys school attended by Prince William from 1995 to 2000 and one of Britain’s most famous educational institutions.
While the royal family has not publicly discussed the reasons behind the decision, education experts have suggested that Eton offers several advantages that make it a natural fit for George.
One of the biggest factors is location. The school sits just across from Windsor, allowing George to remain close to home while gradually gaining more independence.
Speaking on HELLO!’s “A Right Royal Podcast” before the announcement, Good Schools Guide managing editor Melanie Sanderson explained why the arrangement makes sense.
“You can see Eton College from Windsor Castle,” she said. “So that would be lovely for George to be able to pop home.”
Unlike many traditional boarding schools, Eton allows students more flexibility to return home on weekends, making the transition easier for families.
Sanderson also pointed to the school’s reputation for academic and extracurricular opportunities. Over the years, Eton has educated 20 British prime ministers and countless prominent figures from around the world. She described its offerings as being on a level few schools can match.
“Eton, above all the other schools, has a breadth that’s really unparalleled,” she said.
Beyond academics, she noted that George’s future role may also have influenced the decision.
“He’s going to be head of the Church of England one day,” Sanderson explained, noting that religious life remains an important part of the school’s culture. She also suggested that an all-boys environment may have appealed to William and Princess Catherine as they considered the next stage of their son’s education.
For the Prince and Princess of Wales, another priority has reportedly been protecting George’s privacy. During William’s years at Eton, efforts were made to shield him from intense media attention, allowing him to focus on school life.
Royal experts expect a similar approach for George as he began what may be one of the most closely watched chapters of his young life.
