Prince George’s Eton Life Comes With Some Very Royal Perks — And Restrictions

Prince George is about to begin one of the biggest chapters of his young life — and his new school accommodation is already attracting plenty of attention.
The 13-year-old future king is preparing to start at Eton College in September 2026, following in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and uncle, Prince Harry.
But while Eton is one of Britain’s most famous schools, it is not simply the prestigious education that has royal watchers talking. George is also expected to follow a very particular family tradition when it comes to where he will live during his time there.
The young prince is widely expected to board at Manor House, the same Eton residence where William and Harry lived during their school years. The house already has an important connection to the royal family — and its existing security arrangements could make it a natural choice for George.
Reports also highlighted a curious detail about the accommodation: a particularly desirable room at Manor House may be repurposed to accommodate George’s protection officers rather than another student. George will have a room of his own at Eton, though this is no special privilege afforded to him as there are no shared rooms at the school.
It is a small but revealing reminder that, although George will be heading to school like thousands of other teenagers, his experience will inevitably be rather different.
The timing is particularly significant because George’s education is increasingly being viewed through the lens of his eventual role as king.
At just 13, however, his parents are understood to be keen to give him as normal a childhood as possible while gradually preparing him for the responsibilities that await him.
Eton may therefore represent more than just the next step in George’s education. It could be the place where the future king begins to develop greater independence, friendships and confidence away from the immediate protection of his family.
For George, the move also marks the first major separation from his siblings’ school life. Charlotte and Louis are remaining at Lambrook, meaning the three Wales children will no longer share the same school.
And Eton comes with its own intimidating collection of traditions and terminology.

New students at Eton have to learn the school’s unique customs, navigate its historic houses and get used to a vocabulary that includes calling teachers “Beaks.” There is even a traditional “colors test,” requiring new boys to learn the colors and locations associated with Eton’s houses and buildings.
Yet, Prince George is hardly entering unfamiliar territory.
His father, Prince William, attended Eton from 1995 to 2000, while Prince Harry was there from 1998 to 2003. William’s experience at the school was particularly significant, with Eton providing him with a degree of normality and independence during his teenage years.
Now, more than three decades after William first walked through Eton’s gates, his eldest son is preparing to do the same.
Eton is a full-boarding school, meaning George will spend much of his time living on campus rather than commuting from the Wales family home. Yet the school is conveniently close to Windsor, allowing him to remain relatively near his parents, Princess Catherine and Prince William, and his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
“And the boys now are allowed a little bit of freedom to pop in and out of school at the weekends, to come home for Sunday lunch or tea on a Saturday evening after their sports fixtures,” The Good Schools Guide’s managing editor Melanie Sanderson told HELLO! magazine.
As for phones, while William had revealed that none of his “children have any phones,” this may change.
“I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he will have a phone then that has no internet access,” William said.
And while his royal status will follow him through the school gates, his parents may be hoping that, for the next few years at least, George can simply enjoy being a teenager.
Still, with his father’s old boarding house potentially becoming his new home — and protection officers reportedly occupying part of the space — there is no escaping the fact that this will be a very royal school experience.
