The Prince and Princess of Wales have notably been guiding their children into their future roles in the limelight and royal duties. In a heartwarming display of royal tradition and family bonding, Prince George, aged 11, joined his father, Prince William, in the 2024 edition of the annual festive football match on the Sandringham estate for the first time. This event is a cherished fixture for estate workers and local villagers every year, and it marked a significant milestone for the young prince, reflecting his growing involvement in royal customs.
The pre-Christmas match featured Prince William and Prince George playing together on the same team, both donning blue jerseys, with William sporting the number 18. Their participation was met with enthusiasm from spectators, who praised George’s energetic participation and natural athleticism on the field. Prince George's first football match at Sandringham estate was one to remember with his mother, Princess Catherine, and his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, watching and cheering on from the sidelines. The Prince of Wales even almost scored a goal during the friendly game, causing a frenzy of excitement at the event. Prince William and his firstborn son seemed to enjoy their father-son activities and have been spotted at various sporting events in recent years having the time of their lives. One insider noted:
“It just looked like healthy father-and-son bonding time…There were other children playing and it was all good fun and light-hearted.”
It was great to see the royal family back at Sandringham estate in December 2024 for the annual friendly football match between the Sandringham estate workers and the local villagers. The Sandringham football match has a unique history within the royal family. In earlier years, Prince William often played alongside his brother, Prince Harry, and their last joint appearance in the match was believed to be in 2016. While it’s unfortunate that the Duke of Sussex hasn’t participated in the game in recent years, the inclusion of Prince George in 2024 signified a generational continuation of this festive custom, highlighting the evolving roles within the royal lineage.
“It is nice that they have returned to take part in the traditional game as they haven’t done so for years…But it was interesting to see that Harry has now been substituted for Prince George,” an insider shared.
The Prince of Wales has had his young son accompany him to sporting events several times in recent years. A keen football enthusiast, much like his father, George has previously accompanied Prince William to various matches, including visits to Aston Villa's Villa Park and England games at Wembley Stadium. Their shared passion for the sport was evident during the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, where both celebrated England's performance. While they both enjoy the sport and are fans of football club Aston Villa, Prince William has insisted that he doesn’t force his young son to support the team as he can support any team he likes.
“I’m trying not to persuade him to be a Villa fan, I’m letting him choose his own way. It’s about finding what fits for him,” he said.
It is always good to see the continuation of royal patronage in sports and culture, and Prince George and his siblings will undoubtedly find their way into royal duties.
