Prince George Debuts A More Mature Look In Birthday Portrait Ahead Of Next Royal Chapter

Prince George marked his 13th birthday on July 22, 2026, with an official portrait that captured a striking transition from childhood to adolescence. Photographed by Matt Porteous at Kensington Palace after Trooping the Colour, the future king appeared relaxed and confident in a dark navy suit and open-necked white shirt. The less formal styling gave the image a warm, natural quality while highlighting how much the eldest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales has grown.

“Happy 13th Birthday, George!” William and Catherine wrote when sharing the portrait through their official social-media channels.

Born at 4.24 pm on July 22, 2013, at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, Prince George Alexander Louis is second in line to the British throne after his father, Prince William. He weighed 8lb 6oz and was introduced to the public on the hospital steps on July 23, 2013, wrapped in a white shawl and held by his parents.

George spent part of his infancy in Anglesey, where William served as an RAF search-and-rescue pilot. He later attended Westacre Montessori School Nursery in Norfolk and Thomas’s Battersea in London. In 2022, after the Wales family moved to Windsor, George joined Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at Lambrook School in Berkshire.

Kensington Palace confirmed that George will enter Eton College in September 2026. The decision places him at the same school attended by Prince William and Prince Harry. Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton describes itself as a boarding school for boys aged 13 to 18. Its official pastoral-care information stated that it is a full-boarding school with no day or weekly pupils.

Living at school during term time will be a considerable adjustment after years of attending school alongside his siblings. However, Eton’s location near Windsor allows George to remain close to the family home while adapting to the traditions and independence associated with boarding-school life.

The move also carries symbolic weight. George is being prepared gradually for a future that will combine private responsibilities, public service and royal duty. Prince William and Princess Catherine have avoided placing him constantly in the spotlight, but each carefully chosen appearance offers a clearer picture of the person he is becoming.

For his milestone birthday, a short family video also offered another glimpse of George away from ceremonial appearances. Filmed during an Easter holiday in Cornwall, it showed him wearing orange-framed sunglasses, playing cricket, traveling by boat and climbing barefoot over rocks with his younger brother, Prince Louis. He was also pictured spending time with the family’s cocker spaniels, Orla and Otto. The accompanying message read:

“Thank you for all the birthday wishes for George today!”

The images reflected the balance William and Catherine have sought for their children: introducing them gradually to public life while preserving ordinary family experiences. George has appeared at major occasions including Trooping the Colour, the Easter service at St George’s Chapel and Wimbledon, yet his parents have kept much of his everyday life private.

His teenage portrait therefore represented more than a birthday tradition. It captured a young royal standing at the beginning of a significant new chapter, with greater public interest in his future role and a major change in his education.

At 13, George is no longer simply the small boy introduced outside the Lindo Wing. His birthday portrait presents a poised teenager approaching a new school, greater independence and a steadily developing place within the monarchy.
