Prince George And Princess Charlotte Have Same Hobby As Their Grandma Princess Diana

Dec 28, 2020 by apost team

As Princess Charlotte grows older, royal family fans are starting to talk more and more about how she looks like her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her grandmother, the late Princess Diana. This would mean, between her parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princess Charlotte probably bears more resemblance to her father than her mother.

From the kindergartener's little smirks that reflect Princess Diana’s famous grin, to their closeness in face shape and hair, fans cannot help but point out the similarities she has with The People’s Princess. But there's another thing that she shares with her grandmother, and that is a love for dance. And it seems like her brothers do, too!

Together with her parents and her two brothers, little Princess Charlotte seems to be getting into the Christmas spirit. On December 11th, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their three children to watch a Christmas pantomime play, and it marked the kids’ first red carpet event, PEOPLE reports. Although Princess Charlotte is surely taking wonderful qualities from both of her parents, she is developing her own unique spirit.

The cheeky princess was seen refusing to hold her dad’s hands as they walked on the red carpet toward the Palladium, and in the summer of 2019, she was spotted sticking her tongue out at the crowd at The King's Cup regatta. According to Harper's Bazaar, Charlotte also caused quite the stir when she barred photographers from attending her little brother Prince Louis’ Christening. “You’re not coming!” the fierce Princess reportedly said to the paparazzi. In this, she is echoing a bit of her grandmother's, Princess Diana's, fierce and free spirit.

When she was alive, Princess Diana used to notoriously break royal protocols. She was the first woman in the royal family who chose not to say she will "obey" her husband Prince Charles during their wedding vows. All the generations before Diana followed the royal tradition of saying it, however, Diana was the first to break it, and years later when her sons got married their wives chose not to say it either.

Diana’s free spirit was evident in the way she would bond with Prince William and Prince Harry. She was known for being a fun parent, taking Harry and William to theme parks and on roller coaster rides, participating in their sports days in school, and even taking them to McDonald’s.

Being the only female descendant of Princess Diana currently, fans are always excited to learn how else five-year-old Princess Charlotte takes after her late paternal grandmother.

It was common knowledge that when she was still alive, Princess Diana loved to dance. She even had dreams of becoming a professional ballerina when she was a little girl, but grew too tall (according to Cheat Sheet Showbiz, she measured at five foot 10 inches) for a career in that field. As Oprah Magazine noted, she was a patron of the English National Ballet, which further underlined her love for the dance. She was not afraid to flaunt her moves at events--she even took to the dance floor at the White House during her first visit to the United States in 1985. It was President Ronald Reagan’s gala where she famously danced with actor John Travolta to the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. This event became so iconic that Diana’s dress from the evening was subsequently called the “Travolta Dress.”

But thanks to the recent popularity gained by Netflix’s The Crown, fans of the British royal family and the show have been curious about one particular dancing occasion of Diana’s: her pas de deux to Billy Joel's Uptown Girl in 1985. According to Oprah Magazine, viewers were left wondering if Princess Diana really did dance to the 80s hit like they showed in the Netflix series. The answer is: yes she did. The Princess had approached British dancer and choreographer Wayne Sleep to help her choreograph a routine she could dance with him to surprise her then-husband Prince Charles at a charity gala at the Royal Opera House in London. “I thought she must be crazy," Sleep said to Vulture, according to Oprah Magazine. " But she was insistent … she wanted it to be a surprise to her hubby for Christmas."

They had weeks of rehearsals in secret at both Kensington Palace and at Sleep’s dance studio. "We brought the house down with humor because they didn’t know what was coming next," Sleep said of their pas de deux. "And at the end, we joined each other. It was almost like a chorus line and a kick line. Our legs got higher and higher."

Billy Joel himself even tweeted about it in November 2020: “Netflix's 'The Crown' Season 4: In 1985, Princess Diana had a vision to surprise Prince Charles at a private show for supporters/friends of the Royal Ballet’s holiday celebration. She asked choreographer Wayne Sleep to choreograph a dance to her favorite song, "Uptown Girl.""

Prince Charles, whom the dance was meant for, was allegedly not happy about it. In Tina Brown’s book The Diana Chronicles, she wrote that Prince Charles “had not been ravished by the spectacle of his wife en pointe. His disappointing response, when it leaked, was interpreted as frigid disapproval of Diana’s lapse in royal etiquette.” This was also portrayed in The Crown.

Even though Prince Charles was not too pleased by the whole thing, Sleep said Diana “couldn’t have danced it better.” "I was the nervous one! I was shaking in the wings,” he said. “What if she doesn’t like it? What if I dropped the future queen of England?"

Princess Diana’s love for dance was confirmed also by her ballet teacher, Anne Allen. “She had dance in her soul,” said Allen, according to Express. “I realized the pure enjoyment that it gave her.”

Allen added: “She loved the freeness of being able to move and dance. I could see it helped to alleviate her emotional life.”

Diana’s passion for the performing arts seems to have been passed on to her granddaughter. While chatting with English National Ballet director Tamara Rojo about Diana's passion for dancing back in 2017 at the Princess Diana garden at Kensington Palace, mom Kate Middleton said of her then-two-year-old daughter: "She absolutely loves it,” according to HELLO! Magazine.

According to HELLO! Magazine, dad Prince William told the same thing to Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his family back in 2017 when the Prince learned that the Prime Minister’s twin daughters attend a stage school. “My daughter Charlotte loves dancing,” William proudly said.

But Charlotte is not the only one. In December 2018, Harper’s Bazaar reported that both Princess Charlotte and her older brother Prince George are taking weekly ballet classes.

As Prince William said to BBC Radio 1 Teen Award winners regarding dancing, "George is doing dance as well, he loves it. My mother always used to dance, loved dance. If it's something you love, you do what you love and it's very important, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You keep at it.”

In August last year, hundreds of male dancers gathered and performed at New York Times Square to show support to Prince George and male ballet dancers after the third-in-line to the British throne was mocked by Lara Spencer, a television host for Good Morning America, for taking ballet lessons, the BBC reported.

“Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William: we’ll see how long that lasts,” the Good Morning America host said on the show in August 2019. According to Classic FM, the host has since apologized for her comments.

Many dancers and choreographers took offense and condemned what she said. In response, they started posting videos with the hashtag #BoysDanceToo on Twitter. Many tweets expressed not just support for Prince George and his ballet dancing, but also for young boys who might be interested in pursuing the dance.

“Boys dance too. Shut out that laughter and you can be successful if you work really hard,” said Travis Wall, the choreographer for the musical The Wrong Man MCC, according to Classic FM. A total of about 300 dancers showed up at the Square to dance ballet.

At two years old, Prince Louis is catching up to his older siblings in their love for dance. In 2019, PEOPLE reported that he and his mom attend weekly music classes where they sing and dance alongside other families in a musical toddler playgroup.

“Kate attends the weekly £12 (approximately US$16) Monkey Music sessions with one-year-old Prince Louis,” a source said in the Daily Mail in November 2019. “There are dozens of the events run all over the country every day, and for security reasons, I won’t say which class Kate attends."

The source added that Kate shows a lot of enthusiasm while she is in the class, which is led by a monkey puppet. PEOPLE reports that the Duchess and her youngest son likely go for Monkey Music’s Heigh-Ho class, which is recommended for babies 12 months and older, according to their official website. “Moving and dancing freely around the room with Monkey encourages your child to express the music that they hear with their whole bodies,” reads the description of the Heigh-Ho class. “Exercising to music forms and strengthens neural bridges that are necessary for later learning.”

We hope that all of the royal children take their father’s advice and continue on with dancing! How else do you think the little royals will take after Diana? Let us know in the comments!
