Prince George And Princess Charlotte Enjoy The Same Hobby As Princess Diana

May 06, 2021 by apost team

The royal family has a long history of passing on their hobbies to the next generation. Queen Elizabeth reportedly received her love for horses from her father, which she then passed on to her own daughter, Princess Anne. Princess Anne then passed the passion on to her daughter, Zara Tindall, who was on Britain’s Olympic equestrian team, according to Vogue

Prince Phillip played polo, and then passed on his love for the sport to his son Prince Charles. Then Prince Charles shared it with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who also play the sport as well. It seems likely that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will continue in their grandmother’s graceful footsteps.

Back in 2018 Prince William and Kate Middleton got the chance to speak with BBC’s Teen Heroes, a wonderful group of teenagers who were recognized as unsung heroes in their schools and personal lives. Among the winners was Junior Frood, a young man who uses his love for dancing to combat bullying.

Prince William opened up to Frood about his son, Prince George, taking dance lessons and said that he really enjoys them. Prince William also mentioned that his mother, Princess Diana, loved to dance as well. It seems that this family may have a dancing gene that has been passed from Princess Diana to her grandchildren. In 2017, Kate revealed that Princess Charlotte was also taking dance classes and said that she absolutely loves dancing.

When Princess Diana was young she studied ballet and had dreams of becoming a professional dancer, but reportedly was too tall. There are many famous moments when Diana would take the dance floor, one of the most memorable was in 1985 at Ronald Reagan’s White House Gala when she danced with actor John Travolta. The pair danced to songs from the film “Saturday Night Fever” and the iconic off-the-shoulder black dress Diana wore became known as the “Travolta dress.”

Whenever Princess Diana was in her element on the dance floor, no one could take their eyes off of her. The Duke of Cambridge shared that she was a fantastic dancer, and the hobby clearly brings up good memories for him. Perhaps this is what inspired his children’s love for the hobby as well.

From the way Prince William speaks about dancing you can tell he has a lot of respect for it. "George is doing dance as well, he loves it. My mother always used to dance, loved dance. If it's something you love, you do what you love and it's very important, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You keep at it," he told Frood at the BBC Teen Heroes event in 2018.

The prince makes a good point about following your passions, regardless of what the world thinks. This message is very much in line with Princess Diana’s ethos. In fact, it seems like dancing was one of the things that helped bring the princess out of her shell. “When I first met her you could see that there was a huge shyness. But over time as we went through our dance class realised just how much dance meant to her,” said her private ballet tutor, Anne Allan, according to The Sun.

Allan continued, “She had dance in her soul. I realised the pure enjoyment that it gave her. She loved the freeness of being able to move and dance. She loved it. I could see it helped to alleviate her emotional life. That was hard for her at that time.” Dancing is a great emotional outlet and that could explain the Princess’s love for the hobby.

In the 1980s Princess Diana also studied ballet with private tutor, Wayne Sleep. The two worked together on a routine for the Royal Opera House. "The audience gasped when Diana appeared, as if they’d all taken one huge breath. The routine had a bit of everything: jazz, ballet, even a kickline,” Sleep said to The Guardian

Sleep recalled the incredible performance he shared with Princess Diana, "At one point, I pirouetted and she pushed me down; then I carried her across the stage. I remember thinking, don’t drop the future Queen of England.” It seemed the performance awakened something in Princess Diana. "She loved the freedom dancing gave her. A few days later, I got a letter. She wrote: 'Now I understand the buzz you get from performing',” said Sleep.

Prince William also shared a memory about his mother’s passion for dance. “I remember (my mother) showing me ballet shoes she had been given and she was so proud of them . . . We’ve been going through her music collection recently and there’s some quite eclectic stuff in there,” he said according to Vogue. It sounds like Princess Diana had a wide range of tastes when it came to music.
