The tragic passing of our country’s 41st president, George H.W. Bush, on November 30th shed a light on the truly special relationship that the United States shares with Great Britain. George H.W. Bush was a WWII veteran, and his passing reminded us of the deep relationship the U.S. and Great Britain have shared since the strong alliance formed during WWI and WWII.

That relationship was showcased with a visit from Prince Charles. He honored the late president by traveling to the U.S. to attend the funeral. This trip was the first he has made to the United States in four years. He came on behalf of the queen, who has travel restrictions due to her age. Prince Charles attended the funeral with his wife Camilla. Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales and his wife, Camilla, is the Duchess of Cornwall.

Attendees of the funeral saw Price Charles in conversation with Mike Pence prior to the ceremony beginning. He joined other European dignitaries who traveled to attend the funeral, such as former Prime Minister John Major. Prince Charles met Bush in 1985 and the two made moderately frequent visits for special occasions. Bush visited Britain in 2002 for the opening of the American Air Museum.

Queen Elizabeth II also honored George H.W. Bush. Immediately after learning of his passing, Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement that spoke to the sadness she felt when learning of the death of President George H.W. Bush. She noted the honorable way her served his country, both as a leader and as a patriot during the Second World War. She also honored him as a great friend and true ally of Great Britain before sending her thoughts and prayers to the American people and to President Bush’s entire family.

Although her statement contained the Queen’s traditional restraint, she and President George H.W. Bush shared a longstanding close relationship. In fact, she traveled to Texas in 1991. She was the first British monarch that has ever visited Texas. She speaks fondly of her trip to Texas, stating that both she and Prince Philip enjoyed the visit. Additionally, the queen knighted George H.W. Bush in 1993.

The respect that both the queen and the prince showed for Bush’s passing is incredibly moving. It is a testament to how countries can certainly have their differences, but align for a common good.

Prince Charles honoring Bush and his family with a formal visit is a beautiful gesture. What do you think? It is a great story to pass along. We could all use some uplifting news right now!
