It is an annual tradition for Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall to release a family portrait for their Christmas card. With the holiday approaching very soon, the photo taken for the card was released on the royal couple’s Instagram account, @clarencehouse, on Thursday, December 17th, 2020

The couple, who have been married since 2005, was shown in the photo sitting side by side on a wooden bench in the garden of Birkhall, Prince Charles’ home on the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. According to Country Life, the home is also known as “Royal Deeside,” and given to him following the death of his grandmother, the Queen Mother, in 2002.

In the picture, Prince Charles has one arm behind Camilla and is looking to the side while Camilla looks straight into the camera. Prince Charles, who contracted the coronavirus back in March but has since recovered, appeared to be in good spirits and health, as did Duchess Camilla. The couple looked to be glowing as the sunlight beamed upon them. They posed surrounded by colorful flowery and shrubbery from the garden, a place which holds dear to Prince Charles.

“It is such a special place, particularly because it was made by my grandmother,” said Prince Charles in 2013, according to Country Life. “It is a childhood garden, and all I’ve done, really, is enhance it a bit.”

Their outfits matched albeit subtly. The husband and wife were both wearing blazers but in different colors - a beige number with a blue pocket square for Prince Charles and a satin black blazer with buttons for Duchess Camilla. They also had comfortable footwear put on, both pairs in the color black. The duo had different light-colored collared shirts underneath their blazers, but Duchess Camilla sported a more casual look with her jeans accessorized with a black belt while her husband looked classy in a pair of sandy white pants.

The picture seen on Instagram, which currently has nearly 108,000 likes, has many fans commenting on how beautiful the husband and wife looked together. The same picture was posted to their Twitter account on the same day. According to PEOPLE, tweet replies to the couple’s Twitter account, @clarencehouse, have been restricted because some of the recent replies to tweets made on the account have not adhered to the Royal Family’s social media guidelines. The magazine added that the royal family members do not permit or tolerate comments with abusive content.

The Crown spoiler alert!

According to PEOPLE, some reports say that negative tweet replies were targeted at Duchess Camilla, following the release of the fourth season of Netflix’s The Crown. The premise of the new season is on the beginning stages of Prince Charles (played by actor Josh O'Connor) and his late ex-wife Princess Diana’s (played by actress Emma Corrin) relationship. In the show, ‘Prince Charles’ and ‘Duchess Camilla’ (played by actress Emerald Fennell) are shown to be having an affair with each other.

Because of the show’s depiction of Prince Charles’ relationship with the late Princess Diana, PEOPLE added that it has caused controversy. The backlash caused Oliver Dowden, the British government’s Culture Secretary, to get involved in the discussion. Dowden says that while the show is based on the lives of the real royal family members, Netflix should make it clear that it is a work of fiction. He said to Daily Mail: "It's a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that … Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact."

Attended a service at an 800-year-old church

The royal couple’s schedule seems to be quite busy as they attend various events and make visits to several places in the days leading up to Christmas. On December 7th, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla attended a service at Salisbury Cathedral in celebration of its 800th anniversary where they also had the honor of unveiling a specially engraved stone to mark the milestone.

Joined their family members to say thanks

Two days after that, they joined the Queen and other members of their family, including husband and wife Prince William and Duchess Kate as well as Prince Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, at Windsor Castle as they thanked essential workers and key volunteers from organizations and charities located in Berkshire who will be working over the Christmas period.

Duchess Camilla showered four-legged friends with love

Then on December 9th, Duchess Camilla visited Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, a charity she is a patron of, where she “ shared a few festive treats with new furry friends, on behalf of her own two rescue pups, Beth and Bluebell,” according to a post on the Clarence House’s Instagram. Her visit was also in commemoration of Battersea’s 160th anniversary of “of taking in and rehoming animals in need.”

During the visit, the royal, who is an avid dog lover, unveiled a plaque (with the help of Beth, her Jack Russell terrier) to open new facilities at the animal shelter which is located in Old Windsor, Englefield Green. “The newly designed facilities aim to reduce stress and infection for mothers and their puppies,” read the caption of the post. “It even includes a special system, which will play different types of music throughout the day, to help keep dogs relaxed!”

Prince Charles visited The Ritz London and ate pudding

While Duchess Camilla showed her love and affection to the furry friends at the shelter, her husband was out at The Ritz London on the same day to meet with the staff of the hotel from all the departments, including the kitchen team, concierge, and housekeeping, to learn about how they have been holding up with the ongoing pandemic. One of them was a chef who has cooked for members of the royal family many times, Executive Chef John Williams MBE.

“I have been so worried about the devastation being caused by this pandemic - we really are so glad you are getting back to business,” Prince Charles had told The Ritz London staff, according to a post on the royal’s Instagram page. The prince was presented with a Christmas pudding made by the chefs, and wished all the personnel a "Happy Christmas and a better New Year."

According to the hotel’s website, it received a Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering Services back in January 2002, an award presented to them by Prince Charles himself. It is the first and currently the only hotel to have been awarded with this Royal Warrant.

Paid a visit to the vaccination hub together

Then just two days ago on December 18th, the royal highnesses paid a visit together to the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s Covid-19 Vaccination Hub to meet with National Health Services staff and learn about the success of the vaccination program so far. According to the official website of Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla, vaccines have started being administered to frontline health and care workers earlier this month. To date, over 1,124 National Health Services staff have been vaccinated. The couple last visited the hospital in June, after the first lockdown in the United Kingdom was lifted.

Went to the mail delivery office

The day after their visit to the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, Prince Charles toured the Royal Mail’s delivery office in Cirencester and showed his gratitude to local postal workers who have been extra busy during the pandemic and this festive season. “Covid-19 restrictions have revived the art of letter writing, which has led to a big rise in parcel deliveries throughout the pandemic,” read the caption on the royals’ Instagram post.

Shared a message of comfort

On Sunday, December 20th, The Telegraph’s Stella Magazine published an entry composed by Duchess Camilla herself. In the entry, the Duchess gave a message of comfort as she addressed the loneliness problem that many people, particularly the older generation, experience during this time of year.

“Feelings of isolation and loneliness can, of course, be particularly acute at Christmas.,” she wrote. “Last year, it was estimated that 850,000 older people would be spending Christmas on their own. Sadly, that number is expected to rise this year.”

She encouraged those who are feeling vulnerable to reach out to the Silver Line, a free one-stop national helpline that caters to older people in the United Kingdom. According to their website, the Silver Line offers “information, friendship and advice to older people in the United Kingdom, available 24 hours a day.”

“For those of you who are feeling a bit isolated, I would encourage you to make the most of The Silver Line’s helpline: they have a team of wonderful people, ready and waiting at the end of the telephone to cheer you up,” the Duchess said.

“If you are a reader who would like to support others, please do consider getting in touch with someone who could be lonely this Christmas,” she added. “Or you might be inspired by The Silver Line and feel able just to pick up the telephone and brighten someone’s day.”
