Prince Archie Turns 7 & Meghan Markle’s Wales Family-Linked Birthday Plan Has Prince Harry Reportedly Worried

Every year on May 6, the world turns its attention — however briefly — to a little boy growing up far from the royal spotlight. Prince Archie of Sussex turns 7 this year, and while his parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have kept him largely shielded from public life, the glimpses they have shared over the years paint a picture of a boy who is happy, loved, and very much his parents’ son.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, 2019, at the Portland Hospital in London — arriving almost exactly one year after his parents’ wedding. He was the first child of Harry and Meghan, and his birth was met with an outpouring of joy from royal fans around the world. From the very beginning, his parents made clear they intended to raise him differently. When they stepped back from royal duties in early 2020, Archie was barely eight months old. The young family moved briefly to Vancouver Island before settling in Montecito, California, where they have built their life ever since.

His birthdays over the years have been characteristically private and warm. For his first, Meghan was filmed reading “Duck! Rabbit!“ to him on her lap while Harry filmed from behind the camera — a sweet, unguarded moment shared with the world. For his second, a photo of Archie holding balloons in a field accompanied a message urging fans to donate to a vaccine equity fund. His fourth birthday brought a surprise from a local Montecito bike shop, whose British owner felt inspired to send a gift. The family later sent a handwritten thank-you note — a small but telling detail about how Harry and Meghan are raising their son.

As Archie has grown, so have the glimpses his parents have shared. In December 2024, the Sussex family Christmas card featured Archie and his younger sister, Princess Lilibet, alongside the family dogs — and royal fans were quick to notice just how much Archie has come to resemble his father, right down to the bright red hair. Earlier in 2025, Meghan shared a striking black-and-white photo on Instagram of Harry walking with Archie through their Montecito garden, carrying Lilibet on his shoulders — a quiet, beautiful snapshot of the family they have built.

Now, as Archie approaches his 7th birthday, reports suggest the celebrations are shaping up to be a little more visible than usual. According to The Royal Observer, Meghan is reportedly keen to mark the occasion with an official portrait — inspired in part by the Wales family’s tradition of releasing birthday photos for their children. The move would coincide with the release of her Signature Candle No. 506 on her lifestyle brand As Ever, named in tribute to Archie's May 6 birthday.

Harry, however, is said to be more cautious. Having grown up entirely in the public eye himself, he understands better than most what exposure can cost a child. A source told New Idea that Harry is “fearful of trolls and putting a target mark on their young son’s back,” and worries that a formal portrait could change Archie’s life, “and not necessarily in a good way.”

It’s a tension that speaks to just how seriously both parents take their role. Whatever May 6 brings — a quiet celebration at home or a glimpse shared with the world — one thing is clear: Archie is deeply loved. Happy 7th birthday, Prince Archie!
