The beautiful twins, unaffected by their sudden popularity, decided to use their new-found fame when their father recently became ill. Their father, Kevin, got diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma in October 2019. He’s had to go through chemotherapy. But Kevin needed a bone marrow transplant to recover from his battle with cancer fully, Inside Edition reported, as he suffered from a very rare and very aggressive type of cancer.

Within 24 hours after appealing to their Instagram followers, their then 1.5 million followers (now 1.8 million) were made aware of their plight. Kevin, the twins’ dad, was once quite the athlete. He even almost made it to the Olympics as a swimmer, according to their Instagram page. But back in 2019, instead of swimming or enjoying life with his family, he was struggling for his life. He had already started on his chemotherapy. It was already clear that he would need at least twelve rounds of it to battle this aggressive cancer.

Leah Rose and Ava Marie encouraged their followers to support bone marrow transplants at a bone marrow drive. They wanted to help their dad any way they could and asked their followers to help as well, if they were able. You’ve got to give these two lovely little ladies kudos for using their beauty and popularity to help their dad recover from cancer. The girls and their mother went on to add that even if no donor for their father was found, more people getting tested meant that somebody else suffering from leukemia might find a bone marrow match. Since the procedure by which the bone marrow is extracted is painless, there is a good chance somebody who matches a person suffering from this cancer will say yes to donating some.

People also reported that the family grew closer during this for them harrowing time. The girls' father stated:

“At the end of the day, life needs to move forward. There’s so much love out there. I’ve gotten text messages, emails, and phone calls from people who I haven’t heard from since college. It has helped our family really deal with it in a very positive way.”

Thousands of their fans underwent testing for a suitable bone marrow match. Finding a bone marrow donor is a complex process and includes much more than just matching blood types. Bone marrow also has to match certain protein markers that the body uses to tell the immune system which cells are friendly, okay cells, and which are not. Injecting bone marrow with the wrong markers would cause the patient's immune system to go haywire; essentially attacking either the transplant or itself in its confusion. Because of this, even family members are often not a good match for the patient.

The process used to extract the bone marrow has evolved over the years. In the past, doctors would need to insert a needle into the bone of the donor and actually extract the bone marrow this way. This process was often quite painful and a deterrent to potential donors. Thankfully, medical science is involving. A new procedure called Peripheral Blood Stem Cell donation (PBSC for short) allows a painless extraction of blood stem cells from the marrow. This procedure is very new and still being studied at the moment.

In the case of Kevin Clements, a donor was luckily found early in 2020: his brother Chris was a positive match. In February 2020, Chris donated bone marrow via PBSC donation and Kevin left the hospital three weeks later, recovering from his fight against cancer.
