Pregnant Woman Goes Into Early Labor 'Mid-Flight' And Flight Crew Scrambles To Help

May 26, 2022 by apost team

Nearly 350,000 babies are born every day in the world. But it's not every day that a baby is born while flying in an airplane. The idea of having a baby on the plane sounds like a scene straight out of a movie, doesn't it? In fact, the statistics of this happening are extremely small. Only one in every 26 million passengers is born on an airplane.

One set of passengers endured the ride of their life as a Frontier flight traveled from the Denver International Airport to the Orlando International Airport in May 2022. One mother went into a very unexpected and early delivery as the Frontier flight was up in the air. One flight attendant named Diana Giraldo helped the mother in labor to the back of the plane and into the lavatory.

According to Frontier Airlines, Giraldo helped the birthing mother deliver the baby mid-flight. The plane didn't even make the original destination of  Orlando; the airport dispatch directed them to Peniscola, Florida, instead. Once the flight deterred and landed, there was an ambulance waiting for the mother and her newborn baby.

After the new mom and baby made it safe and sound to the hospital, Frontier Airlines later shared that the baby's middle name was named 'Sky' after being born in the air. Following such a dramatic flight, Frontier pilot, Chris Nye, had endless praise for the flight attendant who helped deliver the special bundle of joy. The pilot also added that the whole crew had to pitch in and help by playing different roles on the flight to make it all possible.

"The whole crew really did a great job. I transferred controls and flying duties to my First Officer as I coordinated the diversion," Nye said. "Dispatch did a great job as well by suggesting Pensacola Airport and getting a gate and paramedics ready for us."

In a Facebook post, Frontier Airlines wrote, "Exemplary" and "calm" were the words Captain Chris Nye used for Flight Attendant Diana Giraldo's heroic task of delivering a baby recently mid-flight."

The pilot added, "This was a job well done, and I was happy to see everyone working together to successfully deliver a newborn on an aircraft!"

This plane ride of a lifetime was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fortunately, everyone and everything ended up safe and sound. The mother was so touched by the experience she named her daughter after it. Frontier Airlines posted on their Facebook page, "The mom opted to name the baby's middle name Sky since she was born on our mother and daughter plane tail, Luna and Lilly the Wolves."

Aside from the champion of a mother adapting to her birthing circumstances, Frontier Airlines paid tribute to the flight attendant.

"Exemplary" and "calm" were the words Captain Chris Nye used for Flight Attendant Diana Giraldo's heroic task of delivering a baby recently mid-flight," the airline wrote

After Frontier Airlines shared the news, the internet went crazy with happiness. Facebook users wrote, "That is so awesome! Love everything about this story."

Another posted on the iconic post and said, "This baby should fly free on Frontier always."
