Pregnant Wife Threatens To Pull Husband’s Access To Daughter’s Birth Certificate Due To His Name Choice

Feb 16, 2022 by apost team

Becoming a parent is exciting for a lot of reasons. You have the chance to start a beautiful family and raise your child or children to become the best possible version of themselves and see all of their hopes and dreams come true. The steps leading up to becoming a parent and preparing to have kids can also be extremely fun, like picking out items for the baby’s nursery and coming up with the perfect baby name.

For one husband and wife, they found themselves excited about the planning process of starting their family. The husband went to Reddit on Feb. 10, 2022, to talk about how he and his wife were getting ready for the adjustment of their new life as soon-to-be parents. However, he also needed Reddit users’ advice, as he and his wife were having difficulty choosing a name for their daughter, who is going to be born by June.

The husband explained how he wanted a traditional female name for his daughter, but his wife wanted something more gender neutral. While he agreed that some gender neutral names are beautiful, he and his wife still couldn’t land on one that they both liked.

His wife became so frustrated with him not wanting to name their daughter something gender neutral that the woman threatened to not allow her husband any say in the delivery room, specifically regarding the baby’s name and the birth certificate. Since then, the couple has continued to argue over this issue, resulting in some much needed help from Reddit users.

Their Big Disagreement

Starting off his Reddit post, the original poster (OP) explained that he and his wife are both 27 years old. They have been together for eight years and married for two, and are expecting a daughter by June 2022. “We both agreed we wanted to know the baby’s gender just for curiosity so she is our first baby,” OP said. “...We have had the baby talk before and we discussed how many we plan on having, where, how far apart in age we would like them to be etc…. names hadn’t been an issue until we found out the sex.”

OP continued, “I love the bane Juliet for a baby girl but my wife says she doesn’t want any traditional girl or boys name, she wants a gender neutral name in case our kids ever decide they want to transition.” The two worked on finding a gender-neutral name they both liked, but couldn’t come to an agreement.

OP tried explaining to his wife that most people who transition end up changing their name anyway, so it wouldn’t matter if their daughter had a traditional girl name or a gender-neutral name now. “I also mentioned some people change their names just because, my grandma being one of those people and I used her as an example, but she won’t budge,” OP said.

OP was determined to like his daughter’s name while his wife was determined to pick out a gender-neutral name. Unfortunately, the situation only got worse and the couple continued to disagree with one another.

OP continued, “Wife kind of threatened to not give me a choice and will tell nurses and doctors beforehand to not ask me for the baby’s information for the birth certificate. I feel it is ridiculous and a name shouldn’t take away any rights or opinions on my baby girl.”

He asked Redditors if they disapproved of how he was going about the situation since he wouldn’t give his daughter a gender-neutral name. He also edited his post, explaining that the names he had in mind included Juliet, Orion, Violet, Scarlet and Dakota, while his wife wanted a name like Hunter, Scout, Payton, Rory, Morgan or Kai.

The majority of users agreed that OP was not in the wrong, and instead called out his wife for her behavior. One person commented, “A name doesn’t determine someone’s gender. Your wife threatening you with that is a huge a****** move though.”

Others pointed out how a gender-neutral name doesn’t necessarily mean it’s one that will last. Another person said,  “Take it from a trans person, your wife is very much overthinking this. Your kid can always change her name whenever she feels like it, so picking a name to be gender-neutral won’t actually matter that much.”

A third user wrote, “While your wife’s intentions are good, you don’t know if your baby will even want to keep their name if they transition. I have a friend who is transitioning and she has changed her name despite it being a gender neutral name to begin with. To her the name was representative of her life before the transition.”
