Pregnant Mother Criticized For Asking Husband To Choose Her Life Over Baby’s After Health Complications

Having a baby is a very exciting time for new parents, but it can also be very overwhelming and scary. There is a lot to learn in a short period of time, from which doctor is the best, to what proper diet and exercise plan will be best for the mother and the baby’s health, and so much more. Taking all of this into consideration, it’s not hard to see why many parents worry about the worst case scenario, as they need to make sure they are as ready as possible for anything to happen.
Back in 2019, a mom went to Reddit to share her pregnancy experience. She said that her daughter was born two years prior and that everything had gone completely fine in the long run, but there were several issues along the way that resulted in some tough conversations with her husband. The mom explained how she developed gestational diabetes toward the end of her pregnancy and worried for both her health and her baby’s health.
Before she went into the hospital, she asked her husband that if it came down to it that he would choose to save her life over their baby’s. Unfortunately, this is something that affects many families. According to the CDC, about 700 women die each year in the United States as a result of complications during pregnancy or delivery.
Since then, many people have slammed the mom for her statements, including her own friends. She asked Redditors for their advice on the matter, and what she should do moving forward.
A Tough Conversation

In her Reddit post, the original poster (OP) talked about how she had “a very good pregnancy” but developed gestational diabetes at 32 weeks due to her being overweight. Her doctor scheduled a cesarean section for her delivery to ensure the safety of both OP and the baby.
OP explained, “So before going into the hospital I talked with my husband that if something (were to happen) and he needed to choose between myself and our baby to please choose me. He got quiet but said that he agreed…” Fortunately for the family, everything went according to plan, and both OP and the baby were completely fine.
In 2019 – two years after welcoming their daughter into the world – the couple talked about wanting to have a second baby. OP said that she and some of her friends met up around the holiday time to talk about everything, and the conversation of babies came up.
OP explained:
“I said that I do want another baby and that pregnancy doesn’t scare me such as giving birth again. I said that I straight told my husband again that I’m scared that something may happened to me during the birth and in the hopes of giving my daughter a sibling I could leave her without a mother. That the original agreement stands that he needs to choose me if that’s the case.”
Unfortunately, her friends weren’t supportive of this, and were actually “disgusted” by her remarks. They called OP a “very negative person” for making herself and her husband imagine such horrible scenarios.

Considering The Future Possibilities

OP reasoned that she just wanted to plan for the worst case scenario, but hoped for the best. She continued, “I didn’t want my husband to be blindsided with who to choose and to have the answer on the spot.” She said that no one wants to think about what could go wrong, but she needed to consider all of the possibilities – good and bad.
Even though OP’s friends weren’t on her side, many Redditors were. Many people talked about how hard it would be to leave a child without his or her mother, and to make OP’s husband take on the responsibility of being a single father.
One user commented, “You can make another baby, there can’t be another you. Also, if your husband agreed, it’s none of their business.” Another user said, “I told my husband the same thing and he agreed with me.”
OP replied to the comment thread, saying, “Thank you! Yes my husband admitted that he thought about the same case and was feeling awful that he wanted to save me. So he wasn’t (forced).”
Since then, OP has edited her post to explain that she plans on talking with her friends about how their comments hurt her. She also said that she and her husband had made many plans prior to her giving birth about anything that could have been thrown their way. “People don’t like to think about the bad stuff during pregnancy but the risks for the mother are massive, your body goes under so much,” OP said. “It also takes a mental toll on you.”
