Pregnant Doctor In Patient Gown Pauses Her Own Labor To Deliver Another Woman’s Baby In Distress

They say a doctor is never truly off-duty, and one expectant mom proved that to be true when she delayed her own labor to assist another pregnant patient at the hospital. Dr. Amanda Hess, an obstetrician-gynecologist from Frankfort, Kentucky, checked in to deliver her own baby. However, she soon heard that a nearby patient was in distress.

"Is that a woman screaming?" Amanda's husband asked. The doctor couldn't help but inquire what was going on. It turned out that a patient down the hall was in need of assistance. The woman, Leah Halliday Johnson, had dilated more quickly than anticipated, and her baby was on its way now.

Leah's doctor was returning from a break, but her contractions were constant and the pain was almost unbearable. She was screaming out in agony and ready to deliver. Amanda couldn't stand by and do nothing, so she sprung into action amidst her own contractions. She put on another gown to cover her own and covered her shoes with a pair of boots before hurrying into Leah's delivery room.

She pulled off the delivery all the while being fully dilated. Her own baby was about to arrive, so the doctor quickly finished up Leah's childbirth and headed back to her own room to deliver a healthy baby girl.

Unexpected Deliveries

Babies have a mind of their own. While the average labor for a first-time mom is anywhere between 6 to 12 hours, labor can progress rapidly in many cases and result in births taking place in completely unexpected places.

If you want to speed up your labor, make sure you stay upright and active. Mobile moms experience faster labors and quicker deliveries. Although most patients traditionally spend their entire time fighting off contractions in a hospital bed, there are many other preferred labor positions that can expedite the process and make contractions more tolerable.
