Most people, especially women, spend plenty of time in their life thinking about and planning their ideal wedding. Their special day is a time when they can celebrate their shared love with their partner while also ensuring everything is as beautiful and perfect as possible. Leading up to a wedding can be fun and stressful, as so much needs to be planned — from flower arrangements and dinner ideas to the music that will be played.

There are a few unspoken rules one should remember while attending a wedding ceremony. Some of these are cardinal rules, like not wearing white unless you are the one getting married or unless the bride has called for the color to be part of her color scheme. Another rule is to not let your phone ring during the ceremony, so either silence it or turn it off. Lastly, it’s important to make sure that the special day for the happy couple stays focused on them. In other words, do not do anything to take that day away from them.

One man in Sydney, Australia seemed to forget that last rule when he proposed to his girlfriend during his friends’ wedding in November 2020. Diverting the attention away from the blushing bride, the man got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend during the reception. The shocking proposal was posted to TikTok in February and has sparked a debate in the comments. It has continued to go viral since its original upload. Were the bride and groom happy with their friend following his romantic yet distracting gesture?

Turns out it was actually the groom’s idea to have his best friend carry out the romantic gesture at his wedding. The groom, Laiven Bene, and his bride, Catrin, were the masterminds behind their friend’s epic proposal. Bene was actually the one who uploaded the video of his friends’ once-in-a-lifetime moment.

According to the Daily Mail, Bene wanted to make his wedding day “extra memorable.” The news outlet further reported that the groom “wanted to do something special and different” during the reception, and his now-wife was on board with the plan.

In the short TikTok video, Catrin was seen holding her bouquet and gearing up to throw it, a typical wedding tradition. Whoever catches the bouquet is supposedly the next person to get married, and this was most certainly true for the happy couple’s friend. Catrin pretended like she was going to throw the bouquet before turning around and directly handing it to her surprised friend. The bride then spun her friend around to reveal the friend’s boyfriend who was waiting on one knee and holding a ring.

While it was Bene’s and Catrin’s special day, it was their friends’ time for a moment in the romantic spotlight. The proposal was a success, and everyone celebrated the immense amount of love in the air. Despite the newlyweds appearing perfectly happy to share their special day with their friends, as they were the ones who orchestrated the whole plan, a number of social media commenters have had other thoughts. Many have shared their own disapproval, since taking the attention away from the new couple is usually seen as rude and tacky.

Conflicting Opinions

Plenty of TikTok users voiced their opinions in the comment section of Bene’s video. One woman wrote, “You wait your whole life for the perfect wedding day just for someone else to make it about them. I’m a good friend but I would never allow this.” The feeling seemed to be mutual between the users. “If anyone does this on my wedding I’m throwing hands,” another person wrote.

However, none of the comments could dismay the newlyweds and their engaged friends. According to the Daily Mail, Bene recounted the proposal as “magical,” and he and his bride were “more than happy to give two minutes out of our night to our best mates.”

Even though the comments could not deter them from being happy, other people piped up to agree with the couple and their friends. “This is so beautiful and so selfless,” one TikTok user wrote. Scoop Upworthy reported that more people agreed with the happy couple on their decision to help their friend propose at their own wedding.

“That is real friendship right there!” one TikTok user commented. “The bride was secure enough to know that that wouldn’t take away the shine from her and allowed her bestie to experience her own joy and that moment!” Another commenter wrote, “To share such special memories with your bestie for the rest of your lives. An amazing friendship and love.”

Whether people agree or disagree, the newlyweds and their friends seemed to have had a great night full of an incredible amount of love and happiness. Maybe their friends will carry on the new tradition and even help someone else get engaged at their own wedding!
