Thieves can strike anywhere and at any time. The Christmas spirit might not dissuade burglars from passing up opportunities for theft. And at times, the people who commit thefts may be unexpected. In fact, this thief targeted presents left at a police station in Massachusetts. Even more, the thief turned out not to be human, but a dog.

The report would seem to come from the "strange-but-true" section of the newspaper, but in fact, was reported by WFXT in Boston. Here's the whole incredible story: a four-legged creature robbed Christmas presents placed under a police station's watch for charity. And it was an inside job. The thief turned out to be the local police dog.

The police therapy Golden Retriever named Ben Franklin became part of the station family about 10 months before, reports Wicked Local. Unlike his namesake, the canine has now developed a reputation for getting into trouble. Once presents started disappearing, suspicion pointed to the intelligent dog.

The staff at the police station started to collect toys and dolls for the Santa Foundation, a charity that provides gifts to underprivileged families. Since no one worried about anyone taking the toys, they sat unguarded in a classroom. And the classroom door was left open. Open doesn't mean unlocked, and the door was left wide open.

Ben Franklin had no problem entering the classroom two days in a row and making two toys his own, according to Time. The dog can't deny what he did. An officer caught him on camera in the act.

No one blames the dog, as he doesn't know better, and it was his human co-workers who left the door open. So all is now forgiven, and Ben Franklin gets to keep his toys. From now on, though, the classroom will remain shut.

Dog lovers may get a kick out of this story. Tell them the tale, one that provides a little humor and happiness during the Christmas season.
