It is also important for community members to be aware of animals at risk of extreme temperatures during the winter months of the year.

Some unethical pet owners leave their pets outside with no shelter or inadequate shelter, frozen water bowls and little or no food.

Why the Cold Is Dangerous for Pets

While you might look at a dog or cat and figure that since it has a coat of fur, it will be fine in the winter, this is not necessarily the case. Domesticated animals have been bred to live with people inside of buildings. They are not prepared for the cold.

When the wind chill is at an extreme level, such as 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, even the furriest and healthiest of dogs and cats could experience hypothermia, frostbite or death when outdoors.

What One Police Officer Did

In Columbus, Ohio, winters are variable. The winter of 2019 has seen wind chill warnings, flood warnings, dense fog advisories, wind advisories and days with temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

During a recent cold snap, the National Weather Service issued wind chill warnings. The agency warned that animals should be brought inside for safety and protection. A neighbor reported that a big, black dog was chained up outside in the cold. Columbus Division of Police sent an officer to the scene.

The officer got the dog off of the chain and brought it into his car for warmth.

About the Rescued Dog

The police investigated and found out that the dog's owner was in the hospital. Family members were bringing food to the dog every few days. However, in the extreme weather, this was not enough. The dog was emaciated and nearly froze to death.

The dog had been suffering for a while under extreme conditions. The police took the dog to the Columbus Humane Society for veterinary care and preparation for adoption.

The Police department had this to say about the adorable pup:

'This dog is the sweetest thing and deserves to be treated so. Sits for treats. Gentle kisses. Loves to be pet.'
