In many homes, a dog is a true member of the family. When a dog unfortunately runs away, the family is devastated and may go to great lengths to bring their pet back home. When Lassie escaped from her family’s home in Missouri, they spent hours driving around in the dark trying to find her. Unfortunately, they had no luck.

During that same time, the local police department received a tip that a dog had been the victim of a hit-and-run and may be injured. Using a spotlight on their vehicle, a pair of police officers located the dog laying on the side of the road in the dark. At first, they were concerned that she had not made it. However, when they approached her, they noticed her head move slightly.

Typically, law enforcement will call animal control to address situations like this. However, they noticed that Lassie was in poor condition and needed immediate assistance. They placed her gently in their patrol car and drove her to a nearby animal hospital. Their kindness did not stop there. Lassie was a new mother who had very recently given birth to a healthy litter.

The officers returned to check on the puppies and to make sure that they were being fed and cared for. While Lassie waits for her surgery to repair her broken bones and fluid-filled lungs, she has been reunited with her puppies.

Lassie’s story fortunately has a happy ending, but this is not always the case. Have you had an experience with a lost pet? We want to know more about your situation, so please leave your story in the area below.
