Police Officers Have Dance-Off With High Students In Epic Stage Show

In March 2017, the Knoxville Police Department went up against The Austin East Dancers in a dance-off at a local high school in Tennessee for a community show.

The performance put up by the dance group and the police officers have been described as epic.

Never underestimate a police officer. That was a lesson the Knoxville community learned as the local talent show took on an unexpected turn and the police showed up in force – a dancing force. The evening started tamely enough, with two officers on stage, one playing an electric guitar and the other an acoustic.

Officers gathered behind them and they made a vain attempt to serenade some female police but got nowhere. Exaggerated headshakes and looks of disapproval accompanied their song. That would have been funny enough if it stopped there. But the police department had some big surprises in store. The time had come to bust out some moves.

The women strode to the front of the stage, rocking Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls) with power poses and polished dance moves they don’t show on the street. The men, however, did not stand back and let their teammates outshine them.

The speakers pumped out This is a Man’s World as a number of male officers shouldered the ladies aside and began strutting their own impressive choreography. And the dance-off was on with steps, spins, struts and even a touch of hip hop.

Before the ladies vs gentlemen competition could get too fierce (what would happen if they needed to call the police in?), another group appeared. The Austin East Dancers took to the stage and joined the officers in a rollicking danceathon in which decorum and even some personal pride were set aside for good-hearted community fun.

Quickly the ‘competition’ turned to officers vs dancers as each group moved to outdo the other. Pairing up one dancer to one officer, they moved offstage and down the row. The dancer would show a few moves, and then the officer got a chance.

Sometimes it looked like the officers were trying to copy their dancing buddy, although it was rather obvious who had more dance experience. Eventually all the officers and dancers left the stage and down through the audience, good-naturedly spinning to rhythms and put themselves out there for a good cause. The result? A fun, funny, altogether memorable event that brought the community and the police together.
