A new video from Plymouth in Devon, Great Britain shows a police officer getting to a dog locked in a hot car in time before the animal suffered serious health problems.

Two police officers in Plymouth got a report of a small dog being locked in a car for over two hours in hot temperatures. When the authorities arrived at the scene, they were heartbroken to see the little pooch panting and struggling to get out of the vehicle. Police had no choice but to smash the car’s back window, freeing the dog from its uncomfortable and potentially deadly confinement reports ITV.

When the dog’s owners came back to the car, the two police officers who responded to the incident were shocked by their response to the rescue. Rather than thanking the officers for saving their dog from a potentially lethal predicament, the owners were upset that the police had smashed their car’s window.

The police officers weren’t having any of the owner’s complaints, informing them that authorities can break into vehicles if they feel that the life or health of an animal is in danger.

The police officers later transported the dog to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or RSPCA, for a medical evaluation. If the dog dies or becomes ill due to the trauma surrounding the incident, police can charge the owners with animal cruelty.

Local authorities shared the story on their Twitter page, telling their followers that they have responded to several incidents of dogs left in hot cars throughout the summer. The department pleads with their followers that if they love their dogs, to think about them before they go out for a drive on a hot day.

What do you think of the incident? Should the dog’s owners be charged for leaving him in the car?
