Police Officer & Wife Adopt 24-Hour Old Baby Left At Safe Haven Box, Call It ‘Answered Prayer’

You’ve probably seen one of those scenes in television shows or films where babies are being left at the doorsteps and getting adopted by the people who found them. And you would probably think these are stories you would only ever see on TV or in the movies. But we’re here to tell you that these stories happen in real life. And thankfully, there are people who are kind enough to welcome these babies into their lives and treat them as their own – further proving that there is still kindness in this world.
A police officer from the city of Mishawaka in Indiana named Bruce Faltynski and his wife Shelby finalized the adoption of their 8-year-old daughter Kaia in March 2022, making their dreams of having a child of their own come true. But little did they know that it was only the start of their journey into becoming parents to not just one but two kids.
Weeks after Kaia legally became their child, the Department of Child Services (DCS) called them up to inform them about a baby who needed a home. When DCS contacted them, the baby was only less than 24 hours old. As it turned out, the baby was left in a safe haven box.
With Indiana’s Safe Haven Law a person is allowed to anonymously give up a baby who is younger than 30 days without fear of arrest or prosecution, the Indianapolis Star said.
Meanwhile, Safe Haven Boxes aims “to prevent illegal abandonment of newborns by raising awareness, offering a 24-hour hotline for mothers in crisis and offering the Safe Haven Baby Boxes a last resort option for women who want to maintain complete anonymity.”

“The doctor thought maybe less than 24 hours old when she was initially surrendered in the safe haven box in Lake County,” Shelby told WNDU in an interview. “We are so grateful for Myah’s birth mom, she made a really courageous decision.”
According to WDNU, Myah was first admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a hospital, where she was said to have suffered a stroke.
In November 2022, Bruce and Shelby officially adopted Myah during Adoption Day in St. Joseph’s County, which is among those days that families who wish to get to have a baby look forward to as they finally get to finalize their adoptions in court.
Shelby said Myah is proof that moms have several options to have children. But more than that, she described the new member of their family as an answered prayer. She went on to say that she and her husband also hope Myah’s mom considers them as an answered prayer now that the latter’s daughter has found a home in them.
“It just makes me think moms know that they have an option. Myah was truly an answer to our prayer and hopefully we were the answer to the prayer of her mommy as well.”,” Shelby told WLKY News Louisville.
The couple expressed their gratitude for the blessing after blessing that they have received.
“I think we just feel overwhelmed with gratitude,” the couple told WDRB. “I think that is how, yeah it has been a really long wait and just a journey of yeah, just surrendering our plans,” they added.
It was a long wait for the Faltynskis – but one that is definitely worth it.
