On his last day before retirement, a police officer from the Phillipsburg Police Department in New Jersey made one final dispatch call and is surprised to hear his son thanking him for being the best role model a son could ask for.

Like all young boys, Dean Berrigan grew up idolizing his father, Brian Berrigan. While most children think that their parents are superheroes, Dean’s father was, in fact, a real-life hero. When Dean was only one year old, Brian graduated from the police academy and became an officer with the Phillipsburg Police Department in New Jersey. In his 25-year career, Officer Berrigan, also known as badge number 299, saw many things while protecting and serving the people of Phillipsburg. Responding to countless emergency calls and even delivering a baby into this world, Officer Berrigan made it his life’s mission to help his community.

When Officer Berrigan reached his 25th year in the public service, he decided that it was time to retire. Visibly emotional at the end of his last day on the job, Officer Berrigan became even more moved when it was time for his final dispatch call. Rolling into the police department, Officer Berrigan and his partner heard Dean’s voice on their radio. In addition to providing an example of heroism and duty to the people of Phillipsburg, Officer Berrigan’s example inspired Dean to join the police force as well. The now 26-year-old Dean even got a chance to serve with his father for the first 6 months of his career, where his old man showed the rookie officer how to be an amazing cop.

Listening to his son’s words over the radio, Officer Berrigan had to fight back tears as Dean told the department the history of his father’s career. Dean began by reminding everyone that he was only a baby when Officer Berrigan began his service to the people of Phillipsburg. 25 years later, Dean stands with his father as a brother officer.

While Officer Berrigan is receiving many thanks on his last day of service, Dean thanks him for being the best role model a boy could ask for, a statement that elicited an emotional sigh from his father.

Continuing, Dean reveals that as time went by, Officer Berrigan became more than his father: he became his career mentor. While the younger Officer Berrigan will miss seeing his father on the job, he nevertheless salutes him and says that he will miss him.

Dean further advises his father that while he may be retired from the police force, the Phillipsburg Police Department will always be his family. Closing out his speech, Dean tells his father that he loves him and that he has finally reached the safety of the finish line. Turning the channel over to his father, Dean says that he can now declare himself off-duty.

Officer Berrigan then wiped tears from his eyes, saying to his partner that he is not sure if he can speak after hearing such a heartfelt sendoff. Picking up the receiver, Officer Berrigan says that he is now off-duty, his last words as a police officer being a declaration of his love for his son. Once again turning to his partner, Officer Berrigan jokes that the exchange was brutal for him. Once out of his patrol car, the now-retired Officer Berrigan shook hands and received many hugs from his brother officers at the Phillipsburg Police Department.

While Officer Berrigan is retired from the police department, he will continue working as an electrician for his own company, LDC Electrical Contractors.

What do you think of Officer Berrigan’s story? Have you been moved to join the police or any other service organization because of the example of a family member?
