Police officers are among our nation’s most important figures. In addition to protecting our homes and communities, police officers are usually the first to respond to emergency calls. Braving dangerous weather conditions, you can always count on your local police department to respond whenever the need arises.

Being such important individuals, when a police officer retires, it is usually a time of marked celebration. Recently, the retirement of two officers made headlines around the world.

Office Andre Jenkins recently retired from the Sarasota Police Department after 30 years serving the community. When Officer Jenkins called in his final 10-7, indicating that he was going out of service, social media users broke down from the emotional scene. Sitting in the police car, Officer Jenkins’ partner captured the event and posted it to Facebook.

As Officer Jenkins made his final call to dispatch, he became visually shaken.

Tears stinging his eyes, Officer Jenkins thanked the Sarasota Police Department for their wonderful treatment over the years. Hearing the soon-to-be-retired officer on the radio, other police officers chimed in, wishing Officer Jenkins all the best for his retirement. Wiping tears from his eyes, Officer Jenkins turned to his partner and said, “That’s a wrap.”

Lieutenant Austin Garrett of the Chattanooga Police Department also recently announced his retirement. Lieutenant Garrett celebrated the end of his 25 years of service to the people of Chattanooga with a special radio message to his daughter Haley, who also serves the community as a police dispatcher.

His voice breaking, Lieutenant Garrett told Haley that he was signing off for the final time, telling her to be careful and always remember who she is. Holding back tears, Haley thanked her father for his years of service.

Haley reminded Lieutenant Garrett that he has been a mentor and friend to many in the department, closing by saying, “Thank you for your hard work and dedication. I love you, daddy.”

Officials with the Chattanooga Police Department left a celebratory note on their official Facebook page, thanking Lieutenant Garrett for his work and wishing him well. Despite retiring from the police force, Lieutenant Garrett still plans to serve the people of Tennessee.

Early last month, the former lieutenant became chief deputy of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
